A briefing with persons interested in being Snail\nBounty Hunters was held this morning (Mon) at the Plant Protection Unit on\nFriars Hill Road.<\/p>

Chief Plant Protection\nOfficer,\nDr. Janil Gore-Francis officiated the session and took time out to highlight the\nrules of the first-time initiative in Antigua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier\nthis month, the Ministry of\nAgriculture launched the Giant African Snail Bounty Hunter Programme and urged interested persons to register as the\nPlant Protection Unit intensifies its eradication programme for this\ndestructive snail. <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The\nChief Plant Protection Officer fielded a number of questions and concerns from\nthe workers who were eager to know more about safety measures, compensation and\nhunting areas.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

All\nof these were addressed in-depth by Dr. Gore-Francis who stated that efforts will\nbe made to assign workers in areas where they reside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\nare a number of hot spots for snails across Antigua to include Radio Range,\nJolly Hill and Pigotts among other areas.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The\nworkers who signed a three-month contract for this particular project were\nreminded of the importance of carrying their duties with the discipline that is\nrequired for the programme to be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The\nworkers were also reminded that no more than 30 pounds of snails should be collected\nin a single plastic bag and they were further advised to collect the snails on\nSundays to Thursdays as much as possible to avoid the stench associated with\nsnails that have started to decay before they are disposed of.<\/p>

Plastics\nbags and gloves were distributed to the workers of the programme today (Mon)\nand Plant Quarantine Officer Inika Brooks gave a brief demonstration of safety\nprocedures, including how the gloves should be removed after collecting the\nsnails.\u00a0 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She\nalso shared other valuable tips that are important to those involved in the\nexercise. \u00a0\u00a0To date, 55 registrants have been approved for the\nprogramme and 20 have already signed their contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payment\nfor collection of the snails is at a rate of one dollar per pound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nusing the Bounty System , the participants are being urged not to focus only on\nreducing the amount of adult breeders in the population, but the small snails\nand even the eggs are to be targeted as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nsnail is a hermaphrodite and can multiply in enormous amounts. It has proven to\nbe destructive to many local crops, forcing some farmers to find alternative\nways of protecting their livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every one snail produces 1200-1400 off-springs and between\n5-6 months, they can produce again and add to the snail population.<\/p>\n
