The Halo Foundation, with the\nassistance of the Barbados-based Maria Holder Memorial Trust, has embarked upon\nan extensive initiative to eradicate bullying in the nation\u2019s schools. The\nprogram, entitled the \u201cOlweus Bullying Prevention Programme\u201d, will be\nimplemented in six schools on the island, all of which were selected by the\nMinistry of Education, Science and Technology and will be piloted for the next\ntwo years. <\/p>

Mr. Shawn Clarke, a Certified\nBullying Prevention Trainer and Consultant, has been contracted by the Halo\nFoundation through The Maria Holder Memorial Trust to provide training and\nconsultancy for the six participating schools. To date, the schools have been\nsurveyed to ascertain the prevalence of bullying in each respective school and\nthe findings revealed to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology,\nPrincipals and other selected members of staff. This activity completed stage\none of the implementation process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stage two will see each school\nselecting a \u201cBullying Prevention Coordinating Committee\u201d. These committees will\nbe responsible for ensuring that all program components are implemented with\nfidelity; that information is communicated from meetings to constituent groups\nat school, as it relates to bullying prevention; that continuous support is\noffered to all involved, in their bullying prevention efforts; and that events\nand activities will be planned and executed in order to reduce the incidences\nof bullying on the compound. Mr. Clarke indicated that \u201cover the next few\nweeks, the schools\u2019 teaching and non-teaching staff will be extensively trained\nin bullying prevention and given the tools to address bullying in a meaningful\nway.\u201d<\/p>

President and Founder of the\nHalo Foundation, Lady Williams, commented that \u201cthis exercise is in keeping\nwith one of the major goals of the Foundation\u00a0\n— to assist in moulding the youth of our nation into caring and\ncompassionate citizens. With specific respect to bullying and aggression, surveys\nin six pilot schools show that 43% of our children have reported being bullied.\nWe therefore need to further sensitize our teachers, parents and community\nleaders to its causes, effects and treatment\u201d.<\/p>
