Today, on the\nfirst day of Pollution\nPrevention Week<\/a>, Sandals Resorts International (SRI) announced that\nall 19 Sandals and Beaches Resorts across seven Caribbean islands \u2013 including Jamaica,\nthe Bahamas, St. Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Barbados and Turks & Caicos \u2013 will\neliminate the 21,490,800 single-use plastic straws and stirrers used across the\nresorts each year by November 1, 2018. Eco-friendly paper straws will be\navailable upon request.<\/p>

\u201cLove is at the\ncrux of all Sandals Resorts, and this love extends to the oceans and\ncommunities around them,\u201d said Adam Stewart, Deputy Chairman of Sandals Resorts\nInternational. \u201cWe care deeply about our commitment to preserving both marine\nwildlife and human health within the many beautiful islands we\u2019re connected to.\nEliminating single-use plastic straws and stirrers is only the beginning of our\njourney toward helping create a plastic-free sea in the region we call home,\u201d\nhe added.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandals Resorts\nis committed to moving beyond single-use plastic. Through a new partnership\nwith Oceanic\nGlobal<\/a>, a non-profit focused on providing solutions to issues\nimpacting our oceans, the company is conducting an audit \u2013 both front and back\nof house \u2013 to determine a roadmap to the elimination of single-use plastic\nacross its resorts. The audit will be conducted in accordance to guidelines\noutlined in Oceanic Global\u2019s industry-specific sustainability toolkit, The Oceanic\nStandard. Following the elimination of single-use plastic straws and stirrers,\nSandals Resorts International will explore opportunities to eliminate other\nplastic across its resorts by September 2019. The company has already made\nheadway with the elimination of plastic laundry bags and plastic bags throughout\ngift shops. <\/p>

This initiative is\npart of a larger effort to reduce plastic waste in the Caribbean region, where\nthe Caribbean Sea connects more than 700 islands and coastlines that draw more\nthan 30 million visitors each year. Sandals Resorts is already invested in environmental\nsustainability. The Sandals Foundation<\/a>,\nthe philanthropic arm of Sandals Resorts International,\u00a0has intensified\nefforts to reduce plastic pollution in the Caribbean and educate communities on\nthe dangers plastic pollution poses to the environment, health and tourism. The\nSandals Foundation\u2019s recent initiatives include distributing reusable water\nbottles in schools across the Caribbean to reduce the use of disposable bottles\namong school children, delivering reusable tote bags to supermarkets across the\nregion, and instituting a Solid Waste Reduction Project in Jamaica\u2019s South\nCoast to clean up the communities and educate residents on how to properly\nmanage their waste. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
