THINGS THAT BOTHER ME<\/p>

First: What are the powers of DCA? Surely, DCA can\u2019t just give permission for a commercial development, just based on building codes.<\/p>\n

No commercial development should be granted permission unless it includes parking. This refers to apartments and any structure that will be catering to the public. Antigua now has 55,000 vehicles. They have to park somewhere.<\/p>

With the possible exception of the Epicurean and First Choice supermarkets, no where else has provided the required, adequate parking.<\/p>\n

Friars Hill Road is heading for parking chaos.<\/p>

With Inland Revenue now at Woods, plus all the other businesses, plus the employees, there is no parking available there during the day.<\/p>\n

Parking at Village Walk is impossible. We often wonder why local businesses fail but why would you rent a space to conduct business in a mall that has no adequate parking? If your customers cannot get to your business, how long will you be in business?<\/p>

Now there are at least 2 more malls scheduled for Friars Hill Road, with DCA and the Ministry of Works, paying no attention to parking and traffic.<\/p>\n

There is a massive piece of land that has been cleared on Anchorage Road that I understand will be a hotel and mall.<\/p>\n

If this is so, then the developer must be told that there must be parking for between 150 to 200 vehicles. We cannot have vehicles parked on the side of these busy roads.<\/p>\n

If the businesses in a mall have a total of 100 employees, that is a minimum of 75 employees who will be parking.<\/p>\n

Then what is left for the customers? Once standing outside a mall in Miami, I saw a bus dropping off employees, so I asked how come all the employees from different businesses all came on one bus.<\/p>\n

I was told employees are not allowed to park in the mall. Parking is provided off site and the staff is then taken by bus to work. This, my friends, is the price we pay for development.<\/p>\n

While on this subject, we also need to address the businesses that operate on main roads, either highways or very narrow streets.<\/p>\n

The time has come for these businesses to either cease operation or provide parking for their customers. There are simply too many vehicles on our roads for this to continue. Once again this is the price we pay for development. Things have to change.<\/p>\n

And please. Nobody tell me about how poor people have to live. Unless we are multi-millionaires, we are all poor.<\/p>\n

There are just different levels of poor. There is no one poorer than the middle-class who are paying a mortgage, property tax, house insurance, car loan, car insurance and sending children to private schools or university.<\/p>\n

The middle-class pay the price and make the sacrifices for a better life for their family. So. most of us are poor.<\/p>\n

Let the discussion begin and keep the politics and emotion out of it. Let us deal with reality like intelligent adults.<\/p>\n
