According to a recent Cabinet report, there are a number of healthy elderly persons at the country\u2019s only public hospital, the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, who \u201ccannot be discharged because their families have abandoned them.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

Information Minister Melford Nicholas addressed the matter during a post-Cabinet press briefing, noting that, “There is something that has culturally seeped into the way that our society takes care of our aged.”<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

When asked about the possibility of relocating these individuals to the government’s housing facility for the aged and destitute, Fiennes Institute, Nicholas cited constraints such as space and legal issues.<\/p>\n

Nicholas did, however, mention a plan to construct a new home for the aged and infirm, contingent on securing the necessary capital resources.<\/p>

He also highlighted the unfortunate reality that many senior citizens at Fiennes Institute do not receive visits from relatives, except when it comes time to “sign their retirement checks.”<\/p>\n

He expressed deep concern over this trend, stating, “It is regrettable that people have abandoned their loved ones to the care of the government and their only interest is to exploit their remaining resources.”<\/p>
