This new school year marks the fourth consecutive year that the Sandals Foundation is sponsoring 15 Antiguan youths to participate in the Swalings School of Soccer year-long programme. The sponsorship ensures that the young people receive full soccer kits, coaching, mentorship and opportunities to compete in local and international tournaments. This year\u2019s sponsorship will bring to 70 the number of children directly impacted by the Sandals Foundation sponsorship \u0e27\u0e34\u0e40\u0e04\u0e23\u0e32\u0e30\u0e2b\u0e4c\u0e1a\u0e2d\u0e25<\/a><\/p>

\u201cWe\napproached Sandals Foundation with our proposal to help get children \u201coff the\nstreet\u201d and into a structured after school programme and I\u2019m still blown away\nthat after four years, we are still going strong,\u201d<\/em>\nsaid Director of Swalings Soccer, Duncan Swatton. \u201cWe\u2019ve had children with us from day one, 13 year old boys and girls\nwho will be graduating this year as men and women when our programme for them\nfinishes at 18 years old.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swalings School of Soccer engages Antiguan\nyouths, teaching them valuable life skills through the game of football and\ncreating opportunities for them improve their future. Children meet with\ncoaches and mentors each week to participate in action-packed sporting\nactivities in a safe environment for children of all ages. Executive Director\nof the Sandals Foundation, Heidi Clarke, said the decision to continue the\nsupport of the Swalings School of Soccer rests heavily in the need to continue\nto positively engage youths. <\/p>

\u201cIt\nhas been proven that, through sports, youths have the opportunity to learn\nvaluable life skills which are critical to creating bright futures for\nthemselves and their families. Sports builds community, team-work and empathy and\nhas the ability to teach children to translate a negative into a positive and\nhelp them to realize that lessons learned through failure and loss can\nstrengthen and prepare them for their futures,\u201d<\/em>\nClarke said. <\/p>

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Clarke added that the programme also\nprovides the students with opportunities to participate in local and\ninternational tournaments and programmes, giving them exposure that many of\nthem would not otherwise have. \u201cWe\ncontinue to support because we are also very impressed with the dedication of\nthe Swalings team and the impact the program continues to have on the lives of\nthe children.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, two Swalings School of Soccer\nstudents, Malique George and Tarik Williams, were among the team of youths\nrepresenting Antigua and Barbuda at the Youth Commonwealth Games at U17 Beach\nSoccer.  Today, both George and Williams\nhave been accepted to colleges in the United States of America where they will play\nDivision 1 and Division 2 soccer.<\/p>

\u201c<\/em><\/strong>This\nis one of the reasons we run the programme, helping children learn through\nfootball and then offering opportunities and a chance to excel further in\nfootball with coaching from a young age. They are proof that the programme\nworks and shows what we, Swalings and the Sandals Foundation, can do together\nfor the island of Antigua,\u201d<\/em> Swatton said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the local front, Swalings School of\nSoccer had a remarkably successful year, with the Under 18 team winning the\nNorth Coast Juniors Invitational 7 a-side Tournament and placing third in the\nCool and Smooth Youth Premier League. The Under 15 team won the Swalings Beach\nSoccer League and placed a respectable 4th<\/sup> in the Youth Premier\nLeague with the Under 13 team placing 2nd in the North Coast Juniors Invitational\nTournament. <\/p>

\u201cWe\nnever focus on just the football side of the programme but creating the whole\nperson through the lessons of football. Lessons such as discipline, commitment,\nand fair play, losing and winning with good grace and respect for officials,\ncoaches and other players. Something which they can take with them into the\ncorporate world,\u201d<\/em> Statton said. <\/p>
