Antigua PM Gaston Browne Defends Absence from Jamaica Haiti Crisis Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has sought to justify his decision not to attend the recent meeting on the Haiti crisis in Jamaica.<\/p>

The decision came under scrutiny as Caribbean leaders convened to address the ongoing turmoil in Haiti.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

During a Cabinet session where the Haiti crisis was discussed, Prime Minister Browne reiterated his nation’s stance on the matter, stating that Antigua and Barbuda had previously communicated its position at the last meeting of the Heads of Government in Guyana, held during the early days of March 2024.<\/p>\n

At the Guyana meeting, Browne emphasized that his country wished to see Haitian Prime Minister Henry resign, highlighting that without his resignation, negotiating a settlement would be challenging.<\/p>

However, during the subsequent CARICOM meeting in Jamaica, Prime Minister Henry announced his intention to resign upon the formation of a National Council.<\/p>\n

Explaining his absence from the Jamaica meeting, Browne clarified to his Cabinet that it is not obligatory for every Prime Minister to be physically present at such gatherings.<\/p>

He underscored the importance of his views being known and communicated to the body, suggesting that his physical absence did not hinder the dissemination of Antigua and Barbuda’s stance on the Haiti crisis.<\/p>

Moreover, Browne pointed out the practicality of remaining in Antigua after a week-long absence, implying that his presence in the nation was necessary due to ongoing commitments and responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Despite his absence from the Jamaica meeting, Browne assured that Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in ongoing discussions on Haiti would continue.<\/p>\n

As the situation in Haiti remains fluid, the engagement and coordination among CARICOM member states continue to be pivotal in seeking a resolution to the enduring challenges facing the Haitian nation.<\/p>\n
