The Ministry\nof Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs continues to broaden its scope to\nboost rain water harvesting across Antigua and Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Director of\nAgriculture Jedidiah Maxime said that apart from the importance of increasing\nwater supply for general agricultural use, adequate water supply is also a big\nfactor for the Agricultural Technology Cooperation Project between China and\nAntigua and Barbuda which is to fully come on stream shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nAgriculture Director said that the Ministry\u2019s recently acquired Long Boom Excavator\nhas already done a substantial amount of work at Carlisle, cleaning several\nponds and mini dams.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Based on a set\nschedule, Maxime said that the excavator would be assigned to the various\nagricultural districts to continue similar operation.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Maxime noted\nthat just by cleaning these natural resources, the capacity of some water\ncatchments can be increased by as much as 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPonds by\n50%, mini dams by about 30%; so this is a big focus for the ministry at this\ntime,\u201dMaxime added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He\ncontinued, \u201cWe recognized that cleaning is an important component of increasing\nour capacity because we have existing dams and ponds that have become overgrown\nand silted up so by cleaning, we are actually increasing capacity.\u00a0 If you look at the east country pond with the\nlittle rain that we had the other day, that is what is taking place out in the\ndistricts,\u201d Maxime explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maxime added\nthat the level of work regarding increasing water capacity will be even further\nenhanced when a team of Cubans, including hydrologists, arrive here shortly to\nprovide among other things, technical assistance in locating suitable areas\nwhere more mini dams can be constructed.<\/p>

\u201cOver the\nnext 3- 5 years, I would want to think that our water capacity would be\nsignificantly increased. We would have done some estimation of the water needs\nto expand our production by 2,000 acres and we are looking at in excess of 500\nmillion gallons, maybe in excess of a billion gallons, which would be equivalent\nto the size of another pot works; that\u2019s the kind of water we need to have to\nkeep sustainable production at the level that we are proposing,\u201d Maxime stated.<\/p>

He said that\nthe ministry is also looking at other options of having adequate water for agricultural\npurposes to include water desalination utilizing solar energy.<\/p>\n
