A Jamaican national from downtown Kingston or the troubled streets of Montego Bay can hop on a Caribbean Airlines flight.<\/p>\n

They can land at the V.C. Bird International Airport and tell the Immigration Officer that they are coming on vacation.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The immigration officers know better than I do that no Jamaican comes to Antigua for vacation.<\/p>\n

They cannot afford to \u201cvacation\u201d in Antigua. In fact, they cannot even afford the plane ticket they obtained to fly to Antigua.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Yet, the immigration officer is convinced that these individuals come to vacation in Antigua and are staying at the home of a relative who is not an Antiguan citizen.<\/p>\n

Naturally, this two-week vacation turns into six months and then into overstay. The immigration officers don\u2019t have the care nor the resources to go find these Jamaicans who are here illegally.<\/p>

They wait a few years, and just before an election, the government grants some sort of amnesty.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Before you know it, they are Antiguan citizens. During that wait, they work illegally and embed their violent and criminal culture into the society.<\/p>\n

Some stay, but inevitably, their first stop is the American Embassy to get a visa because they know they can\u2019t on a Jamaican passport.<\/p>\n

Antigua is a mess. Now, I say all this so you can understand my confusion why suddenly Antigua is excluding itself from efforts for full free movement on CARICOM citizens. I mean, how much worse can it get? Antigua is literally no different from the urine-infested streets of downtown Kingston.<\/p>\n

Why does Gaston not want more Jamaicans here? They are already coming in their hundreds monthly, and the six-month limit doesn\u2019t apply to them. So why not just formalize it?<\/p>\n

Antigua has lost its very fabric, and it is too late now. Gaston, your efforts to preserve what little is left of an Antiguan identity will be futile. Antigua has nothing to lose; the floodgates have already been opened.<\/p>\n
