Dr. Cleon Athill Resigns from UPP, Calls Partisan Politics “Evil”<\/strong><\/p>

Dr. Cleon Athill, the former caretaker for St. Paul’s with the United Progressive Party (UPP), recently resigned from her position, citing her disillusionment with partisan politics.<\/p>\n

In an interview on Twin Island Media, Athill shared her motivations for initially joining the party and her subsequent decision to step away.<\/p>

“I’ve always had an interest in social change and social development in Antigua and Barbuda,” Athill stated, highlighting her long-standing advocacy for social justice, human rights, and women’s issues.<\/p>

She saw politics as a means to effect positive change and bring a fresh perspective to governance.<\/p>\n

Despite facing pressure to engage in traditional political strategies, such as offering vouchers and engaging in mudslinging, Athill remained steadfast in her commitment to running a clean campaign.<\/p>

“I declared from the beginning that I’m not going to be engaging in transactional politics,” she emphasized, noting that such practices undermine democracy and diminish the agency of the people.<\/p>\n

Athill expressed her growing discomfort with the party’s direction, particularly its disconnect from the needs of the people. “Political parties have too much access to our brainpower,” she lamented, noting that they often drive a toxic energy that hinders genuine progress.<\/p>

When asked about the possibility of joining another party or running independently, Athill adamantly rejected the idea, describing partisan politics as “evil.”<\/p>

She emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape, stating, “I won’t even consider running as an independent.”<\/p>\n
