A report on corruption at His Majesty\u2019s Prison has recommended
\nthat several persons \u2013 including a senior police officer \u2013 be
\ninvestigated for accusations made against them, one of which
\ninvolves missing funds.<\/p>\n

Based on several allegations of corruption and unfair treatment of
\ninmates, the Prison Reform Committee began an investigation into
\nHis Majesty\u2019s Prison in 2019 and the report was submitted in 2020.<\/p>

Reports say that, contrary to prison rules, money was collected from
\nsporting activities that were staged at the penal facility, with
\nquestions being asked about the use of these funds.
\nAt least six people are identified in the report as\u00a0members of the
\n\u201cWhite House\u201d \u2013 a group of prison officers, male and female \u2013 some
\nof whom are related \u2013 who appeared to control the penal facility and
\noperate as they liked.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

They are said to have been part of a scheme that involved sporting
\nevents to which members of the public were invited. It is alleged
\nthat these were basketball matches between a team drawn from the
\ninmates and teams outside the prison.<\/p>\n

A former prison superintendent reportedly was an active
\nparticipant and organizer of these matches.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to the report, these matches attracted huge crowds, with
\nan entrance fee being charged. Food and drink were also offered for
\nsale, with the proceeds \u2013 including the entrance fees \u2013 to be \u201cused
\nostensibly for the welfare of the inmates.\u201d<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0during investigations into these charges of corruption,
\nCommittee members said that none of the persons interviewed
\ncould identify any improvements made to the welfare of the inmates
\nas a result of the sporting events.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

With this in mind, questions are being asked about the
\ndisbursement of the money earned from the sporting activities.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

As a result, the committee has expressed the strong opinion that
\n\u201cthese matters should be further investigated by the prison
\nauthorities in conjunction with the Ministry (of Justice and Legal
\nAffairs), and if found true, the appropriate action be taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the investigation was initiated and the report compiled and
\nsubmitted four years ago, it has not been made public to date; and
\nthe minister responsible for the prison, Sir Steadroy \u201cCutie\u201d<\/p>\n

Benjamin has not moved to implement any of the committee\u2019s
\nrecommendations.<\/p>\n
