Speaking for several colleagues, one of the airline veterans now on the breadline explains that, after they were called back to work in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, they resumed their usual duties \u2013 but at reduced pay.<\/p>\n

Given LIAT\u2019s limited schedule once it began service, the ex-employee says the lower rate of pay continued until their current termination, which is effective today, February 5.<\/p>

What they did not realize, however, was the impact that the almost- four years of lower salary would have on the calculation of their Social Security pensions.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cAll the years that we were contributing at the maximum level have
\nessentially been canceled out by our income from 2020,\u201d the person
\nsays.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the ex-worker notes that those who are currently
\neligible for pension will \u201cnot be able to make it.\u201d
\nInstead of going into retirement \u201cafter 30 -40 years of work, they\u2019re
\ngoing to have to find some little thing to do in order to make ends
\nmeet.\u201d<\/p>

Those workers who were not recalled to work in 2020 are facing
\npretty much the same problem, the source says.<\/p>\n

Many of them were forced to take lower-paying jobs wherever they
\ncould find them, thus reducing the value of their previous Social
\nSecurity contributions.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In the meantime, the now-former employee says, they are waiting
\nfor the Antigua and Barbuda Government to resume talks with their
\nbargaining agent, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers\u2019 Union.
\nThey say that Prime Minister Gaston Browne\u2019s earlier offer of 50
\npercent of their severance and benefits was \u201cjust talk,\u201d as they
\nreceived no firm offer \u201cin writing.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cWhile some workers were willing to take the combination of cash
\nand land, we heard that we had to speak to our individual
\nrepresentatives about getting the land,\u201d one person says. \u201cThere
\nwas never any designated allotment for the LIAT workers. Never!\u201d
\nAnd with the subsequent 32 percent offer, the person adds, nothing
\nchanged for the locals, even as their counterparts in Barbados and
\nSt. Lucia received ex gratia payments from their governments.<\/p>\n

At present, the former workers are extremely angry over statements
\nmade by LIAT 2020 spokesman Daven Joseph, who recently chided
\nthe Workers\u2019 Union and urged it to return to the bargaining table in
\nthe ex-employees\u2019 interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe deliberately misrepresented the situation, knowing full well that
\nit was the prime minister who shut down all communication with
\nthe Union,\u201d a furious former staff member says.<\/p>\n

The last set of workers has been promised a computation of their
\nentitlements within 45 days of their official termination. However,<\/p>\n

the company\u2019s administrator, Cleveland Seaforth, has said he does
\nnot know when they will actually be paid.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, some of the former staff reportedly have been offered
\nwork with LIAT 2020, whenever it materializes \u2013 but at 70 percent
\nof their original salary, they claim.<\/p>\n

They, and the other terminated employees, continue to wait to see
\nwhether the assets of LIAT (1974) Ltd. \u2013 aircraft, route rights,
\ngoodwill, etc. \u2013 will be sold for their benefit or simply \u201cacquired\u201d for
\nthe benefit of the takeover carrier.<\/p>\n
