Prime Minister Gaston Browne has strongly rebuffed recent criticism accusing his government of hastily opening an embassy in China.<\/p>

Speaking on Pointe FM, The Prime Minister dismissed claims that the process was rushed, labeling the accuser as a “fool” and challenging the credibility of the accusations.<\/p>\n

Browne emphasized the meticulous efforts taken by his government to establish a physical presence in China.<\/p>

He clarified, “It took us months to identify an appropriate building, which had to be sanctioned by the Chinese government.”<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Prime Minister further explained that negotiations with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) had been ongoing for an extended period, involving several visits, including one by Ambassador Brian St Young and the Foreign Minister.<\/p>\n

Addressing the accuser, Browne stated, “This idea that we just went there for a week and rushed to open an embassy is baseless. It’s not because you don’t know better; it’s because you want to create some kind of sensationalism.” The Prime Minister accused the accuser of selectively ignoring the diplomatic protocols involved in such matters.<\/p>

Browne drew attention to the accuser’s own experience as an ambassador, stating, “When he went to Cuba, he had to make several trips before getting a building to open up the embassy. This process is not unique to our situation.”<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister also took a moment to express frustration with unnamed individuals who, he claimed, have engaged in “outrageous and outlandish elements” while in office. Browne insisted that he had chosen not to pursue action against these individuals in the interest of avoiding public spectacle.<\/p>

Responding to the financial concerns raised by the accuser, Browne clarified, “The embassy is not causing us any financial burden at this time. We have secured funding for a few years.” He questioned the motives behind the accusations, stating, “I don’t know what his point is. It’s neither a financial burden nor an undesirable act to establish an embassy in China, a country that is easily the most important developmental partner for Antigua and Barbuda at this time.”<\/p>

Browne denounced the accuser, stating, “There’s nothing worse than an old fool coming to the conclusion that there’s something vulgar about us having an embassy in the PRC.”<\/p>\n
