Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) Addresses Lantus (Insulin Glargine) Shortages, Ensures Full Stock Availability and confirms that there are no shortages of medicatons.<\/strong><\/p>

The Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) reaffirms its dedication to supplying essential medications for the effective management of chronic conditions to its beneficiaries. With an allocation of approximately nineteen million Eastern Caribbean dollars for pharmaceutical procurement, MBS caters to eleven chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n

MBS assures beneficiaries that the required medications for managing chronic conditions are accessible through its network of pharmacies.<\/p>

Nevertheless, the scheme acknowledges a recent challenge concerning the availability of Lantus (Insulin Glargine), one of the insulin types listed in the MBS Formulary.<\/p>

During the week of January 15, 2024, both Lantus presentations (vials and pens\/cartridges) showed zero stock at the Central Procurement Unit. This shortage resulted from the global supply issues addressed in the August 2023 Press Release, affecting not only Antigua & Barbuda but also the wider Caribbean.<\/p>\n

On January 16, 2024, MBS Pharmacies received limited stocks, with 33 pens available at Clare Hall Pharmacy and 6 pens at Bolans Pharmacy. Some private pharmacies also had restricted supplies. Patients facing an immediate shortage were given the option to purchase the required insulin at private pharmacies with full reimbursement. Physicians were contacted to explore alternative insulin options for those in need.<\/p>

In response to the shortage, MBS took proactive measures, and a shipment of Lantus (both presentations) was received on January 30, 2024. By January 31, 2024, all MBS Pharmacies were fully restocked, ensuring beneficiaries can now access the required medication without interruption.<\/p>\n

Maintaining a focus on community well-being, MBS continues to navigate global challenges to deliver quality healthcare services. The Medical Benefits Scheme remains committed to providing comprehensive healthcare solutions, ensuring access to vital medications for the effective management of chronic conditions. Beneficiaries can rest assured that the necessary medication is readily available and can be sourced from the MBS network of pharmacies.<\/p>
