Lewis accuses the government of betraying the public trust by breaking key election promises and imposing new taxes, particularly the increase in the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST).<\/p>\n

In a scathing statement released earlier today, Lewis called on Prime Minister Browne to “keep your election promises and take your hand out of our pockets.” The MP highlighted the rise in ABST, additional taxes, and the escalating cost of living as issues that have sparked public outrage.<\/p>

Lewis reminded the public of Browne’s election assurances that there would be no increase in ABST and that the cost of living would decrease. He expressed deep disappointment in what he called the government’s “unconscionable betrayal” of the public trust, considering the ABLP’s claims of turning Antigua and Barbuda into an “Economic Powerhouse.”<\/p>

The statement from Lewis outlined several key points of contention:<\/p>\n

Broken Promises on ABST Increase:<\/strong> Lewis pointed to the March 3rd, 2023 Budget Statement, where Browne pledged to obtain the necessary funding without increasing ABST by implementing measures such as reducing waste, cutting spending, and improving tax collection. However, Lewis argues that none of these alternatives were pursued, and the promised reduction in discretionary waivers never materialized.<\/li>\n
  2. ABST on Hygiene Products:<\/strong> Lewis accused Browne of reneging on the promise to exclude essential hygiene products from ABST. The Customs Department’s notice indicated a reversal on this commitment, affecting items such as rubbing alcohol, sanitizers, toilet paper, and vitamins.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The MP went on to criticize the government’s financial management, citing the collection of over $13 billion in revenue, access to Citizenship by Investment Program (CIP) funds, and the introduction of various new taxes. Lewis emphasized the need for accountability, transparency, and fairness in handling public finances.<\/p>
