\u00a0The Grenada government says it will send a team to the French islands of Martinique and St. Marten to discuss the best practices adopted by these islands in dealing with the seaweed.<\/p>

\u201cCabinet approved a team to visit both Martinique and St Marten, so they can have first-hand experience about what is taking place and for recommendations for equipment acquisition for us here, \u201cClimate Resilience and the Environment Minister, Simon Stiell said, adding \u201cSt Marten has a well-proven solution to the problem\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

Grenada has spent in excess of one million EC dollars (One EC dollar=US$0.37 cents) in a bid to deal with the seaweed that began washing up on beaches here in late April.<\/p>

Stiell said that satellite images have indicated that as of September, the Caribbean region will be faced with another invasion of the seaweed and as a result the government will be adopting a different strategy to deal with the problem.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeptember is expected to be terrible with sargassum because satellite images show a large mass of sargassum coming to our region,\u201d said Stiell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that new strategy will involve using environment wardens to remove the seaweed and targeting mainly the decaying sargassum as well as cleaning or unblocking drains and waterways that flow directly into the sea.<\/p>

\u201cThis is a priority issue for us and priority action is taking place. This isn\u2019t about solving a problem, the problem is too big for us to solve, it\u2019s not just nationally but regionally, it\u2019s a matter of how we can best manage it in the short, medium and long-term<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn addition to that we have approached the Japanese Government on behalf of our OECS neighbours for both technical and financial support for the ongoing management for this problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>
