The<\/span> People\u2019s Parliament\u2019 rescheduled to January 18 <\/span>to <\/span>mark anniversary of last General Election<\/span><\/p>

The People\u2019s Parliament<\/span>, to be staged by Members of the Opposition Bench, has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 18, the <\/span>United Progressive Party<\/span> (UPP) <\/span>has confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The date of the event has been changed to coincide with the first anniversary of the January 18, 2023, General Election in which the eight Opposition MPs garnered the majority of the popular vote and <\/span>restricte<\/span>d<\/span> the<\/span> Gaston<\/span> Browne Administration to a single-seat advantage.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In addition to their promised response to the $1.3 <\/span>b<\/span>illion budget for 2024, the Opposition MPs will be reviewing the Browne Administration\u2019s first year in office \u2013 a year that saw high inflation,<\/span> high crime, and high rates of borrowing \u2013 but low performance in sectors such as health, education and public works. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Organizers of <\/span>The<\/span> People\u2019s Parliament<\/span> say this historic event will be held at Freedom Hall, starting with a roundtable discussion among the Opposition Senators at 5 p.m., and transition into the \u201cLower House debate\u201d at 6 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

The public is<\/span> invited to attend this inclusive forum, whic<\/span>h<\/span> will be broadcast on Progressive 107.3 FM and Observer Radio and streamed live on several social-media platforms. <\/span><\/p>

In the lead-up to their presentations, the Opposition MPs will appear on a number of radio and Facebook <\/span>program<\/span>me<\/span>s<\/span> to discuss the importance of maintaining an accountable democracy; the impact of the<\/span> recent<\/span> steep <\/span>tax hikes; and the<\/span> current<\/span> state of governance<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Opposition Bench was shut out of the Budget Debate <\/span>o<\/span>n December<\/span> 19,<\/span> 2023, <\/span>when<\/span>Members used th<\/span>at<\/span> day to prepare<\/span> their presentations in the short <\/span>time frame <\/span>they were given<\/span>. \u00a0Finance Minister Gaston Browne seized the opportunity to wind up debate on the 2024 <\/span>Appropriations Bill <\/span>\u2013 from which the Government intends to rake in a billion dollars in taxes \u2013 in a single day.<\/span><\/p>
