Multihazard Early Warning Systems Launched in Antigua and Barbuda Through UN-Backed Initiative<\/p>

In a collaborative effort between the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), the Met Office, and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), a pivotal two-day workshop was recently held at the St James’s Club.<\/p>\n

The focus of the event was the official launch of the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative,\u00a0 \u00a0driven by the UN and championed by local agencies dedicated to disaster risk reduction.<\/p>

Mr. Sherrod James, Director of NODS, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing its timeliness in light of the anticipated surge in severe weather events attributed to climate change.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Recognizing the need for a more robust system to disseminate timely information to vulnerable populations, James stressed the importance of “building back better” in the face of evolving threats.<\/p>\n

Dr. Jair Torres, Programme Manager at UNDRR responsible for implementing the initiative across several CARICOM countries, conveyed his satisfaction with the workshop.<\/p>

He highlighted the diverse participation of local ministries and agencies, expressing excitement about the forthcoming collaborative efforts over the next few months.<\/p>\n

The workshop saw the active involvement of representatives from various agencies, including the DCA, the Department of the Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary Division, and the Immigration Department, among others.<\/p>

National Technical Consultant behind the initiative, Mali Barnes, said this inaugural workshop marks the beginning of a comprehensive series of activities aimed at fortifying Antigua and Barbuda’s Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems.<\/p>
