DUBAI, UAE \u2013 3rd<\/sup> December, 2023\u2026One of the most urgent and pressing issues confronting island nations was the subject of discussions of a high level panel that was addressed by Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne as he continued a wide-ranging round of engagements at COP28 now underway in Dubai.<\/p>

On a day filled with a round of meetings on Saturday Prime Minister Browne was invited to address a major side event whose central theme was the thought-provoking issue of Protecting Statehood,<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Sovereignty & Heritage amidst the Climate Crisis (Coalition on Sea-Level Rise).<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Among the top officials on the panel were President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis, Prime Minister of Tuvalu Kausea Natano and former President of Costa Rica and Special Envoy of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), Carlos Alvarado Quesada.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

With global temperatures climbing, sea level rise is a near and pressing danger that threatens to erase the coastlines of small island states, many of whose economies are dependent on the natural resources of the ocean and coastal areas to support the livelihoods of their people.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>As the clock ticks, we stand at a critical juncture. The consequences of the actions of developed countries are manifesting in the rising tide, but the power to change course rests with us,\u201d Prime Minister Browne told the room of experts and partners involved in the effort to stave off sea level rise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cReflect on the interconnectedness of our world, where the melting ice caps, and warming oceans reverberate across continents, forcing entire communities to move. This is just not a SIDS issue; this is a global challenge that demands a global response,\u201d Prime Minister Browne pleaded.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIn this pivotal moment, let us recognize that the preservation of our world requires collaboration that transcends borders. We must forge alliances, set aside differences, and stand together as stewards of a fragile Earth,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For his tremendous courage and inspiration on this issue, Prime Minister Browne received an award to tremendous applause from the Global Centre of Mobility for being a Champion on Sea Level Rise. Presenting the award Climate Envoy of the President of the United Nations General Assembly and Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility, Kamal Amakrane.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Browne showed immense leadership in helping to lead the charge of the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law (COSIS) in its quest for climate justice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On this effort, he told the event: \u201cWe must be united in our responsibility to act on environmental matters as it pertains to protecting our seas.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe must accelerate efforts to mitigate climate change, transitioning to sustainable practices and embracing renewable energy sources. Simultaneously, we must adapt to the inevitable changes already set in motion, fortifying vulnerable communities and ecosystems,\u201d the Antigua and Barbuda leader urged.<\/p>\n
