Prime Minister Gaston Browne has told public servants that their long-awaited back pay will come before the end of 2018.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister said the matter will be discussed at Cabinet tomorrow, after adding that the back pay will be settled “before the end of the year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The truth is we don’t have the money yet,” Browne admitted.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

“We are now trying to put a mechanism in place to raise the funds so that we can pay before the end of the year,” he added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

According to the prime minister, the cost to the government is estimated to over 40 million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Raising 30 or 40 million dollars is not two cents so we need a little time to raise the money.”<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association (ABPSA) last month\u00a0accepted the government\u2019s final offer of two months of tax-free salary for employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are over 10 thousand public servants in Antigua but not all of them will qualify.<\/p>

The back pay issues dates back to more than a decade ago.<\/p>
