UPP calls for protest action against withdrawal <\/span><\/p>

of Christmas ABST-reduction<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The United Progressive Party (UPP) condemns the Gaston Browne Administration’s heartless and cowardly announcement that there will be no ABST-reduction weekend this Christmas Season.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

That decision is unconscionable a time like this \u2013 when the Statistics Division has just confirmed a second consecutive hike in bread and flour products and a 5.6% increase in inflation <\/span><\/span>for the year ending September<\/span><\/span> 2023<\/span><\/span>; when the Administration is planning a 2% hike in the ABST; and when the period for importing Christmas barrels has been shortened.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The UPP began this tradition of \u201cgiving back\u201d to the people at Christmas time, and residents have long grown accustomed to planning their major purchases around the annual sales-tax reduction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The busine<\/span><\/span>ss community<\/span><\/span> also looks <\/span><\/span>forward to the reduction<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> as it is the peak season for sales, <\/span><\/span>especially of large <\/span><\/span>items like vehicles, equipment, building supplies, and furniture.<\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

T<\/span><\/span>herefore, t<\/span><\/span>o abruptly remove it without consulting the buying public or the businesses they patronize, again, is a <\/span><\/span>unilateral<\/span><\/span> decision by an increasingly insensitive government. <\/span><\/span>And t<\/span><\/span>o do so while the Minister of Finance <\/span><\/span>is conveniently <\/span><\/span>out of the country is nothing short of cowardly. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\n

We have little doubt that, on his return, Prime Minister Gaston Browne will claim that his hands <\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span> tied by the <\/span><\/span>curiously<\/span><\/span> timed statements of Comptroller of Customs Raju Boddu. \u00a0But we have <\/span><\/span>no<\/span><\/span> doubt that this abuse of the people\u2019s trust <\/span><\/span>was<\/span><\/span> carefully orchestrated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

To add insult to injury, Government spokesman Lionel Hurst has feebly stated that the Government will hold consultations on the ABST increase <\/span><\/span>at some unspecified time<\/span><\/span> \u2013 <\/span><\/span>but that it will <\/span><\/span>not<\/span><\/span> consult with the UPP, whom he accuses of making mischief. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For the record, and to expunge Mr. Hurst\u2019s <\/span><\/span>barefaced <\/span><\/span>lie, the UPP has called for consultations with THE PEOPLE since we are a people-first institution; not with the Party. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

And<\/span><\/span>, clearly, <\/span><\/span>the mischief being made is with the people\u2019s ability to save while they spend this Christmas Season after this cruel act by the Browne Administration.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

It is time for the people \u2013 both businesses and consumers \u2013 to take protest action in the face of such disadvantage, and the UPP again calls on the public to support such action when it is called.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
