Citizens Must\u00a0 Address The Underlying\u00a0Issues Of Government Spending Or When They Say Pay We Just Have To Pay<\/strong><\/p>

Just mere weeks after the Prime Minister announced\u00a0in his Independence day message\u00a0that Antigua and Barbuda was expected to see a phenomenal growth rate of over 8 percent this year, which\u00a0according to him made Antigua and Barbuda the country with the second fastest growth\u00a0rate in the region, the Prime Minister has given a clear indication of his government’s\u00a0 intention to raise the Antigua & Barbuda Sales\u00a0Tax by a possible 2 percent soon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

If Antigua & Barbuda is doing so well, then the people should expect\u00a0 at a minimum\u00a0\u00a0NO NEW TAXES<\/strong>\u00a0or even more,\u00a0 a decrease in some of the taxes\u00a0that we are already on the\u00a0books..<\/p>\n

 <\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The age of spending anyhow now without\u00a0accountability is ruining our country and the\u00a0prospects for our children’s future.\u00a0 We cannot allow partisan politics to\u00a0 make us overlook the long term\u00a0effects of blind\u00a0 policies and programs that\u00a0are likely to have a severe negative\u00a0impact on the citizens’ purse\u00a0in the long\u00a0run .\u00a0 If we do not take stock of how we do things now, it will inevitably\u00a0create a future of economic hardships\u00a0for us\u00a0 and generations\u00a0 to come later.\u00a0 We simply\u00a0cannot close our eyes to the reality of the situation that is before us today.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Taxpayers have repeatedly\u00a0watched\u00a0 the government respond to some\u00a0\u00a0problems with the creation\u00a0of new ones,\u00a0 with dire spending initiatives that were never budgeted\u00a0for. Some\u00a0\u00a0cases in point are the Alfa\u00a0Nero Vessel\u00a0 and the enormous amount of money that we are spending to maintain and sustain it,\u00a0 the huge sums of money\u00a0 that was spent on the St. Mary’s South\u00a0by-election, and so\u00a0much more.\u00a0 All this\u00a0 money\u00a0came out of the treasury – it is our money that we paid in taxes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Government must find\u00a0ways and means of reorganizing and repurposing the\u00a0money that it already\u00a0has within the Government\u00a0bureaucracy and not try to impose additional burden on the people by way of additional\u00a0taxes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are also programs within the government that have outlived their\u00a0mission and usefulness\u00a0 and are operating\u00a0 way below\u00a0peak efficiencies.\u00a0 All such wasteful\u00a0spending has been a contributing factor to the government deteriorating fiscal health today.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Quite\u00a0honestly, the people deserve\u00a0 better\u00a0 from their\u00a0government in\u00a0terms of how our tax dollars\u00a0are spent.\u00a0 \u00a0 Every\u00a0dollar spent by the government\u00a0must be measured by its effect on\u00a0actual outcomes.\u00a0 Value for money is the only way.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our system of government\u00a0lacks serious oversight..and\u00a0 there are little or no checks and balances once\u00a0the government budget\u00a0is passed annually. This situation only deepens the mistrust in government\u00a0 and how they spend our hard earned tax dollars.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There must\u00a0be justification\u00a0for wanting to increase taxes when the country\u00a0is doing so good and to\u00a0date the government\u00a0has provided none.\u00a0 Without that, we the citizens would simply just be giving the GOVERNMENT a blank check to do\u00a0as\u00a0they please\u00a0 and when they say\u00a0PAY, WE JUST PAY.<\/strong><\/p>\n
