REAL NEWS: A citizen of Antigua and Barbuda, William \u201cTrey\u201d Smith III, of Cedar Valley, has made history as the first Antigua and Barbuda citizen to participate in a case before the Supreme Court of the United States.<\/p>

Smith, 28, was part of a pro bono team of lawyers from the leading national firm Troutman Pepper, who represented James Rudisill, a decorated US Army veteran who had served three times between 2000 and 2011.<\/p>\n

Oral arguments in the case, Rudisill v. McDonough, were heard on November 8.<\/p>

Rudisill has claimed entitlement to educational benefits under two
\nseparate veterans\u2019 programmes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

However, the Department of Veterans Affairs \u2013 the federal agency
\nthat administers veterans\u2019 benefits \u2013 took the position that the
\napplicable statutes require Rudisill to forfeit a significant portion of
\nhis benefits.<\/p>\n

More than a million veterans like Rudisill are affected by the
\nDepartment\u2019s position, and billions of dollars\u2019 worth of education
\nbenefits are at stake.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Reportedly, the Court \u2013 the highest in the United States \u2013 appeared
\nready to side with Rudisill, with Chief Justice Roberts referring to
\nthe government\u2019s position as a \u201craw deal\u201d for veterans.<\/p>\n

Smith, who was called to the Virginia bar last year, became involved
\nwith the case during his first weeks practicing law.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cI got involved \u2026 last year, when the case was before the Court of
\nAppeals for the Federal Circuit,\u201d Smith says. \u201cMy mentor, Tim
\nMcHugh, asked me if I wanted to help him prepare for arguments in
\nan upcoming case. I had no idea we would end up before the
\nSupreme Court a year later!\u201d\u00a0he adds.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Smith tells the media \u201cit was surreal and humbling to sit before the
\njustices and watch them interact with our arguments.\u201d He adds that
\nhe is \u201cincredibly blessed to learn from [his] talented, hard-working
\ncolleagues\u201d who led the litigation effort on Rudisill\u2019s behalf.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favourite part of this case was getting to know Mr. Rudisill, who
\nis not only entitled to his benefits under law, but is also incredibly
\ndeserving of them,\u201d the young attorney says.<\/p>\n

In the meantime, he hopes the Supreme Court will issue a decision
\nin the coming months.<\/p>\n

Smith is the son of William Smith and Marie-Elena John, who,
\nherself, made history in 1986 by being the first black female
\nvaledictorian of City College in the City University of New York
\nsystem.<\/p>\n

Young Smith graduated from the University of Virginia with a
\nBachelor\u2019s degree in politics in 2018, and from Washington and Lee
\nSchool of Law in 2021. He now practices regulatory law at
\nTroutman Pepper.<\/p>\n

In his earlier years he was a student of the St. Andrews Primary
\nSchool, St. Joseph\u2019s Academy, and Island Academy.<\/p>\n

He represented Antigua as a swimmer at the Commonwealth Youth
\nGames and then captained the swim team at Connecticut\u2019s Kent
\nSchool \u2013 where he completed high school \u2013 to a regional
\nchampionship during his senior year.<\/p>\n
