Stakeholder consultations are held ahead of the bumper cruise season<\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n

(St. John\u2019s Antigua, November 7th<\/sup>, 2023) The 2023\/2024 Winter Tourist Season is setting into high gear, and it\u2019s expected to be bumper.<\/p>\n

With this in mind and considering the ramifications for traffic flow in the city of St. John\u2019s, Tourism Minister the Hon. Charles Fernandez has begun the process of engagement with tourism partners to ensure a smooth process.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Recently the Minister met with the members of the St. John\u2019s Taxi Association as well as members of the traffic department of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda to map out a strategy for the free flow of traffic through St. John\u2019s on heavy cruise ship days.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to Minister Fernandez, \u201cthis year is shaping up to be our biggest year in cruise tourism and will see approximately 31 days where there will be 6 ships and more docking. Further there will be a marked increase in homeporting passengers forecasted to be up to 25,000 this season compared to 2,500 last year and we must ensure that visitors and residents alike have access to free-flowing routes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Traffic Department of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda says they are committed to supporting tour operators and taxi drivers, enhancing traffic control, and ensuring the smooth flow of transportation services in the heart of St. John’s.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Inspector Russel, of the Traffic Department, said officers will be actively controlling the flow of traffic at the critical intersections of Market and St. Mary’s Street and Market and Long Street and that this proactive approach will streamline the movement of taxis and tour buses, making it easier for them to exit St. John’s and embark on their scheduled tours.<\/p>\n

Inspector Russel also stated that on home porting days, the Traffic Department will implement additional traffic management measures.<\/p>

Specifically, sections of Church Street and Lower New Gate Street will be temporarily cordoned off to ensure the efficient flow of traffic, both for taxis entering and exiting the cruise port.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This tailored approach will alleviate congestion and improve accessibility for visitors disembarking from cruise ships.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The Traffic Department’s commitment to these initiatives aims to enhance the experience of tourists and passengers arriving at the cruise port, providing them with a seamless transition into their tours.<\/p>\n
