Economic Growth Is Not A True Measurement Of Citizens Well-Being<\/strong><\/p>\n

From time\u00a0to time, our leaders perceive and promote what they see as our country’s\u00a0 majestic economic growth.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In his recent Independence Day message Prime Minister\u00a0Honourable Gaston Browne highlighted\u00a0what he called Antiguas\u00a0 impressive annual\u00a0growth\u00a0rate, which according to him exceeds 8 percent over\u00a0 the last 3 years.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He went\u00a0on to say that\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda’s growth would be 9.5 percent this current year making us the second fastest growing economy in the region, second only to oil rich Guyana.<\/p>\n

To be quite honest, I think that those figures are nothing short of nice sound bites intended to paint a rosy picture\u00a0of things in Antigua\u00a0& Barbuda.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

If the growth is as wonderful as the Prime Minister made it out to be, it is certainly not felt in the pockets of the average\u00a0Antiguan and Barbudan\u00a0who lives from paycheck to paycheck as a norm.<\/p>\n

After paying their\u00a0monthly bills, many people here struggle to buy basic food items which\u00a0are costly and rising daily.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Whilst many people\u00a0 are gainfully employed, we still have a large number of young people leaving\u00a0school and unable to secure meaningful long term jobs.\u00a0 \u00a0Life\u00a0sure isn’t\u00a0a bed of roses for many as we are led\u00a0to believe.\u00a0 We also have a large percentage\u00a0of our population that\u00a0lives\u00a0in rented properties.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Rents are enormously high, electricity\u00a0and water rates are high and\u00a0unreliable, internet\u00a0and other telecommunication services are high and the list goes on and\u00a0on.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt that things are hard in\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda for the average person so when the Prime Minister\u00a0talks about economic growth, a sizable\u00a0 percentage of the population\u00a0 doesn’t experience, know, see or feel\u00a0 the kind of growth that he enunciates.<\/p>\n

A country’s\u00a0 economy grows when it has the capacity to produce more. Production is based on how much capital, labour, natural resources, and technology it can produce. Policies that encourage the accumulation of any of these leads to economic growth.<\/p>\n

When an economy is producing beyond potential output, it might have experienced an increase in real GDP, but that is NOT economic growth. It would be interesting to hear and learn how the much\u00a0touted\u00a0economic\u00a0growth\u00a0came about.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Usually, the much\u00a0\u00a0trumpeted and acclaimed economic growth is responsible for\u00a0raising\u00a0 living standards.<\/p>\n

However, modern economies such as ours here in Antigua and Barbuda have lost sight of the fact that the standard metric of economic growth, gross domestic product (GDP), merely measures the size of a nation\u2019s economy and doesn\u2019t reflect on\u00a0 the\u00a0 nation\u2019s and its\u00a0peoples welfare. Policymakers and economists often treat GDP, or GDP per capita in some cases, as an all-encompassing unit to signify a nation\u2019s development, by combining its economic prosperity and societal well-being.<\/p>\n

The story is not so simple.<\/p>\n

Focusing exclusively on GDP and economic growth to measure development ignores the true\u00a0predicament of people and their everyday living conditions.<\/p>\n

It is time to acknowledge the limitations of GDP and expand our measure of development so that it takes into account\u00a0 the average\u00a0person’s quality of life.\u00a0 \u00a0Only then would we be truly doing justice\u00a0to the real situation as it pertains\u00a0to the circumstances of the ordinary\u00a0 people.<\/p>\n

Even as we continue to speak about our phenomenal growth year in year out, the country is still grappling\u00a0with a\u00a0 domestic water supply that is sporadic, erratic and irregular at best, poor roads, bridges and drainage\u00a0system, and a run down city that badly\u00a0needs sprucing up.<\/p>\n

Perhaps we should\u00a0airmark some of that growth dollars in fixing these issues\u00a0 and then we would believe that the Prime Minister\u00a0is serious\u00a0 when he\u00a0talks about the country’s staggering\u00a0 economic growth. Until then,\u00a0 we should\u00a0 \u00a0concentrate more on the plight of the ordinary\u00a0 Antiguan\u00a0& Barbudan\u00a0and stop singing this artificial, fictitious and fake economic growth “melody”\u00a0 that is getting\u00a0 us nowhere.<\/p>\n
