RAWLSTON POMPEY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Long before transitioning to \u2018Glory\u2019 [October 20, 2023], only \u2018Heaven\u2019 knows why legendary social commentator \u2018Tyrone \u2018Edimelo\u2019 Thomas\u2019 (deceased), described him as a \u2018Black Rose.\u2019 Such description contrasted nature\u2019s colors of; \u2018Red; White; Yellow; and Pink.\u2019 Whether or not a \u2018Rose,\u2019 and as color-depicted, \u2018James \u2018Tanny\u2019 Rose\u2019 77 by name and nature, shall be remembered in as many ways, as in the many controversies he has created.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/div>\n

DESPISED AND LOVED<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Equally as much as he may have been \u2018Despised,\u2019 he was greatly \u2018Loved.\u2019 There was no doubt, existed in his heart was a special kind of love for his community. Equally as much as he cared for the indigent of society, he loved his family. \u00a0Self-proclaimed, \u2018Voice of the Down-Trodden,\u2019 seemingly, he had lived a life full of intrigues. Whether or not the \u2018Heavens\u2019 were to fall, though not necessarily with disdain, he has said the things he truly felt compelled to utter.<\/p>\n

SOCIAL CONTRACT<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He spoke proudly of his children. However, three individuals, he spoke glowingly of, were; (i) \u2018His woman of business and sister; (ii) Tanny Rose junior; and (iii) Societal business student, Ju-Ju.\u2019 For instance, when he was unable so to do, his sister reportedly conducted his business affairs; His son attended to his physiological and technological needs; while the latter assisted in packaging the weekly food bags for distribution to the indigent of the community. This not only speaks to his generosity, but also his commitment to a \u2018social contract.<\/p>\n

KNUCKLE BLOCKERS<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

When he found time, he could have been seen with \u2018Knuckle Blockers\u2019 in the \u2018Grays\/Green community. They assisted with their own physiological needs from that which he had voluntarily provided. He had his fill with them. Through radio, he introduced himself as the \u2018Voice of the Down-Trodden.\u2019 Then as if the name was too long, he simply reduced it to; \u2018The Voice.\u2019 He became the \u2018Voice\u2019 of; (a) \u2018The struggling grass-root indigent people; (b) Workers in the public and private sectors; and most of all (c) The pensioners.\u2019 People of every stratum society not only gravitated to his name, but were glued to their radios to hear what he had to reveal.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

PROVOCATIVE AS THE DEVIL<\/p>\n

Though not necessarily libelous or defamatory, not even the \u2018Devil\u2019 could get him to back-off from \u2018straining relations\u2019 with people he appeared to have had the most cordial relations. The \u2018Voice\u2019 was as \u2018Provocative as the Devil.\u2019 In some instances, and with some utterances, he may have been provocative and callous, and insensitive, but not necessarily reckless. He gave as much as he took. Even with those was affiliated, he may have invited their wrath for his utterances. In light moments, he would simply say; \u2018Sly, me get me \u2018kin wash on another radio station last night.\u2019<\/p>\n

NEW MILLENIUM<\/p>\n

It all started four years into the \u2018New Millennium-2001.\u2019 Thus, after national parliamentary elections, likened to the rest of the citizenry, he saw all kinds of happenings. Firstly, the year saw much more than the change of public administration. A new Government took the seat of power from the incumbent with a majority \u201812 parliamentary seats to 4\u2019 [March 23]. \u00a0The overwhelming majority was further strengthened by the one-seat constituency of Holy Trinity [Barbuda].<\/p>\n

VICTIMIZED REDUNDANCY<\/p>\n

Himself, a victim of \u2018Victimized Redundancy,\u2019 he saw mass lay-off of workers within the public sector. These were officially classified as non-established workers. Even some names on the \u2018Government Pay-Rolls,\u2019 were called \u2018Ghosts.\u2019 Perhaps, the only people who may have seen these \u2018Ghosts\u2019 working, may have been those laid quietly to rest at the \u2018St. John\u2019s Public Cemetery (SJPC).\u2019 Those accounted for physically in person and made redundant, he advocated for \u2018Redundancy Pay.\u2019<\/p>\n

INCENTIVIZED FINANCIAL PACKAGES<\/p>\n

There were even \u2018Incentivized Financial Packages\u2019 for professionals to quit their established positions. Additionally, he was concerned over widespread victimization against workers or employees in established positions within the \u2018Civil Service.\u2019 Those that seemed to have felt the \u2018pressure,\u2019 brought some measure of ease for themselves. Those so positioned, found ways in communicating to him. Some reportedly did so anonymously or indirectly. He would reveal that he met a document on hist staircase or under the windshield wiper of his motor vehicle.<\/p>\n

DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE<\/p>\n

Then humorously, he would give credit to a \u2018Dog\u2019 he claimed to have been religiously dutiful, watchful and protective that no intruders entered his premises to remove documents or sealed envelopes. Then on the programme hosted by \u2018James Simon, more fondly called \u2018Sly J,\u2019 he would reveal the contents to avid fans and keen and anxious listeners. Startlingly, such often reveal \u2018Documentary Evidence\u2019 that could neither have been called libelous, nor precariously positioned him to face consequential litigious proceedings.<\/p>\n

CIRCUMSPECT: LITIGIOUS CONSEQUENCES<\/p>\n

Following litigious proceedings duly instituted by former \u2018Education Minister, Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro\u2019 [ANUHCV: 2011\/0033],\u2019 against \u2018Grenville Radio Limited,\u2019 joining programme host \u2018Sly J; Lennox Weston; and himself, the \u2018Voice\u2019 became rather \u2018Circumspect\u2019 of that which he should utter without being litigiously callous or recklessly irresponsible. Even when the facts represented irrefutable truths, he knew he had to be mindful of \u2018Malice.\u2019 This resulted in the establishment of a advisory line in communication. Thus, before media-disclosures, he would \u00a0utilize the telephone morning, noon and night to share his thoughts and to ensure he was not subjecting himself or the radio station to \u2018Litigious Consequences.\u2019<\/p>\n

WORSERER \u2013 BROAD DOLLAR NOTE – GASTONITE<\/p>\n

Be that as it may, seeking to engage the programme host or to prompt him into making a comment, not sure himself, \u2018Sly J,\u2019 tight-lipped had found more appropriate to simply respond; \u2018Hmmmmmm.\u2019 The \u2018Voice\u2019 had created and popularized words such as; (a) \u2018Worserer.\u2019 This he used to describe situational gravity; (b) \u2018Broad Dollar Note.\u2019 This he used when describing large sums of money, particularly, seen as \u2018vexingly extravagant or outrageous spending or over-expenditure. In recent times he came up with \u2018Gastonite and Gastonian.\u2019<\/p>\n

GASTONITE TO GASTONIAN<\/p>\n

He had some concerns about the former word. Quietly, he revealed that this word appeared not to have resonated well with \u2018Prime Minister Gaston Browne.\u2019 Conscious of the Prime Minister\u2019s apparent dislike and disapproval, he altered it to \u2018Gastonian.\u2019 He remarked; \u2018I know you don\u2019t talk politics, but I am a Gastonian; Don\u2019t tell me not to say so.\u2019 Clearly hell-bent in saying what he may have truly felt, no attempt was made to dissuade him. If it was considered insulting or grievously annoying, provocative, libelous or defamatory, he would have been given friendly guidance.<\/p>\n

CHRISTMAS FEEDING PROGRAMME<\/p>\n

He once confided that a multi-millionaire businessman wanted him not to publicize certain aspects of his operations. He spoke to the business man\u2019s generosity to his \u2018Christmas Feeding Programme.\u2019 When suggested that he \u2018backed-off,\u2019 he made it sufficiently clear that the \u2018contribution only comes once a year; The workers, he said \u2018were suffering every day.\u2019 Whatever he may have uttered, and how it may have been delivered, it marked the end of the particular businessman\u2019s seasonal contributions.<\/p>\n

FEELINGS OF TRUST<\/p>\n

Though described as a \u2018Black Rose,\u2019 his deeds reflected the \u2018Whiteness\u2019 of the petals of a rose, not found in a garden of Roses. Reflecting upon his own life and time, he was not particularly happy with two members of Cabinet. Seemingly harboring \u2018Feelings of Trust,\u2019 than of apprehension of fear, he freely communicated. Without prompting, he explained reasons for feeling discommoded. Even as he has now transitioned to another place, he held no expectations that they shall be disclosed. He said; \u2018Though I don\u2019t like some of the things he said, but the Prime Minister has been good to me.\u2019<\/p>\n

SOCIAL ACTIVISISM<\/p>\n

The family; loved ones and friends; Grays\/Green community; and the nation mourns the loss of a patriotic national. Posthumously, he might be recognized for his immeasurable contributions to; (a) \u2018Mainstream media: (b) Unionism: (c) Political landscape; and (d) Social Activism\u2019 within the \u2018Antiguan and Barbudan\u2019 society. While history shall record whatever may have been his deeds or misdeeds to humanity, posterity shall not only learn, but also be mindful of his challenges and struggles; trials and tribulations; triumphs and defeats; and joyous and glorious moments.<\/p>\n

TREACHEROUS LIPS<\/p>\n

He was cognizance that should he be transitioned before those that have denied him accrued benefits, they were likely to spew hypocrisy from their \u2018Treacherous Lips.\u2019 Disappointingly, he said; \u2018I don\u2019t even want to hear them, then.\u2019 Subjected to the indignity of arrest for allegations of fraudulent activities, besmirching his reputation, his innocence prevailed. That which might be said; \u2018As it will be interred on his mind, whatever evils may have been perpetrated, or so caused to be perpetrated against him, so they shall be interred with the bones of the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

Finally, no secular weapon formed against him, prospered. Condolences to his bereaved family, as they continue to mourn his great loss.<\/p>\n

Long live the name- TANNY.\u2019 Long may he be remembered for his unrelenting social activism and kindness to humanity and legacy left.<\/p>\n
