Bribery In Voting – Can We Ever Solve it?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Now that\u00a0the much anticipated by-election in St.\u00a0 Marys South is behind us and the\u00a0victorious\u00a0candidate and\u00a0party\u00a0known, I am sure that all parties would likely do a post-mortem of all the events leading up\u00a0to the by-election.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

There was much talk about political inducements or bribes and the role it\u00a0 could play, if any, in the by-election..<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Sadly, inducements or bribes have long been a part of our\u00a0political\u00a0landscape\u00a0 \u00a0and it is something\u00a0that has all been\u00a0made\u00a0normal and almost\u00a0 acceptable in every election cycle.\u00a0 The only reason why the spotlight was placed\u00a0on the by-election, is because\u00a0 we were concentrating\u00a0 on a single constituency poll as opposed to a\u00a0 broader general elections poll.\u00a0 All focus and attention had shifted to St. Mary’s South and it was clear that the stakes were\u00a0 enormously high.<\/p>\n

So what exactly is an inducement or bribe?\u00a0 An indictment\u00a0or bribe is an object\u00a0, situation or an action that is used\u00a0as a means to influence another person’s behaviour.\u00a0 Inducements or bribes can range from minor acts, to acts that result\u00a0in infringement of election laws and regulations.\u00a0 Inducements or bribes can take many different forms, for example, gifts, hospitality\u00a0entertainment, political\u00a0or charitable donations, appeals to friendship and loyalty, employment or other commercial opportunity or preferential treatment, and so much more.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Whenever voting\u00a0is involved, one question is ubiquitous.\u00a0 How can one tell if the results\u00a0have been skewed due to bribing\u00a0 of the voters?\u00a0 \u00a0Democracy is a system where people vote\u00a0for solving issues or to make governance decisions.\u00a0 In the simplest\u00a0cases, the majority wins, which has its own problem.<\/p>\n

Money is power, freedom,\u00a0 a cushion, the root of\u00a0 all evil and the sum of blessings.\u00a0 Money is power and king in voting schemes. The problem is that in most\u00a0cases, and with most voting, the actors are not all honest.\u00a0 When bribers target the right people,\u00a0 especially those who are willing\u00a0 to sell their votes, the party with the most money wins.\u00a0 Regardless of what is being decided by a vote, there should be no room for any type of bribery.\u00a0 But that is in the real world.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Instead of platforms, merit and credibility, cash has become a determining factor for who wins in most elections these days.\u00a0 The influx of cash from all kinds of nefarious sources\u00a0 and groups sways leaders regardless of what is in the public\u00a0best interest.\u00a0 The introduction\u00a0of money into politics has allowed politicians to buy leverage that alters\u00a0the fabric of our economy and country.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

There is no easy or quick fix to this but if we do not do something about these political\u00a0inducements and bribes as well as the overall influence of money in our politics, all our elected representatives would be tarnished now and into the foreseeable\u00a0future.<\/p>\n

Until we have meaningful electoral reform where handing out these inducement are made wrong\u00a0 and punishable, money will continue to be a big factor and could influence all future elections.<\/p>\n
