DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK<\/p>\n

———————-<\/p>\n

At 200 PM AST (1800 UTC), the center of Hurricane Tammy was located<\/p>\n

near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 61.2 West. Tammy is moving<\/p>\n

toward the northwest near 8 mph (13 km\/h), and this general motion<\/p>\n

is expected to continue through tonight.\u00a0 A turn toward the<\/p>\n

north-northwest is forecast on Sunday, followed by a turn toward the<\/p>\n

north on Monday.\u00a0 On the forecast track, the center of Tammy will<\/p>\n

move near or over portions of the Leeward Islands through early<\/p>\n

Sunday, and then move north of the northern Leeward Islands by<\/p>\n

Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km\/h) with higher<\/p>\n

gusts.\u00a0 Fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next few<\/p>\n

days, but Tammy is expected to remain a hurricane while it passes<\/p>\n

near or over the Leeward Islands.<\/p>\n

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from<\/p>\n

the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125<\/p>\n

miles (205 km).<\/p>\n

WIND:\u00a0 Hurricane conditions are expected to begin in the hurricane<\/p>\n

warning area during the next few hours and spread northward across<\/p>\n

the Leeward Islands through tonight.\u00a0 Tropical storm conditions<\/p>\n

are expected within the tropical storm warning areas today and<\/p>\n

tonight, and hurricane conditions are possible in the hurricane<\/p>\n

watch areas through tonight.\u00a0 Tropical storm conditions are<\/p>\n

possible on Martinique today and the British Virgin Islands tonight<\/p>\n

RAINFALL: Tammy is expected to produce the following storm total<\/p>\n

British and U.S. Virgin Islands into eastern Puerto Rico: 1 to 2<\/p>\n

These rains may produce isolated flash and urban flooding, along<\/p>\n

with isolated mudslides in areas of higher terrain.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

STORM SURGE:\u00a0 Storm surge could raise water levels by as much as 1<\/p>\n

to 3 feet above normal tide levels near where the center of Tammy<\/p>\n

moves across the Leeward Islands.\u00a0 Near the coast, the surge will<\/p>\n

be accompanied by large and dangerous waves.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SURF:\u00a0 Swells generated by Tammy will continue to affect portions of<\/p>\n

the Lesser Antilles during the next few days.\u00a0 These swells are<\/p>\n

likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.<\/p>\n
