UPP offers <\/span>$10k <\/span>reward for credible evidence of criminal activity related to SMS by-election<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been brought <\/span><\/span>to the notice of the United Progressive Party (UPP) and Ke<\/span><\/span>l<\/span><\/span>vin \u201c<\/span><\/span>Shugy<\/span><\/span>\u201d Simon, its candidate for the St. Mary\u2019s South, that operatives of the Antigua <\/span><\/span>Labour<\/span><\/span> Party are engaged in criminal activities to undermine the <\/span><\/span>upcoming by-election.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

There are reports that residents are being offered cash for the surrender of their <\/span><\/span>v<\/span><\/span>oter<\/span><\/span> identification cards<\/span><\/span> \u2013 with the specific objective of suppressing support for Mr. Simon.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Such transactions are <\/span><\/span>a criminal offense<\/span><\/span>, according to the <\/span><\/span>Representation of the People Act<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>Accordingly, the UPP is offering a reward of $10,000<\/span><\/span> to anyone <\/span><\/span>who can present credible evidence that can lead to the prosecution of <\/span><\/span>the person(s) engaged in this offense.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>The buying of the by-election must not be <\/span><\/span>allowed to go unrecorded and, subsequently, unchallenged,\u201d the UPP Leadership says. \u00a0\u201cThe <\/span><\/span>people\u2019s right<\/span><\/span> to elect the person they wish to represent them <\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>hould not be subverted<\/span><\/span> by means of bribery, inducement, or threats. \u00a0Elections must be won honestly. \u00a0Democracy demands no less.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
