World Mental Health Day observed annually on October 10<\/span>th<\/span>, aims to raise awareness about\u00a0 mental health issues, promote mental well-being, and advocate for the rights of individuals facing\u00a0 mental health challenges.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The theme for 2023 \u201cMental Health is a Universal Human Right,\u201d underscores the imp<\/span>ortance of ensuring everyone has the right to access quality mental health\u00a0 care and support.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mental, specific neurological, substance use disorders, and suicide form a subgroup of diseases\u00a0 and conditions that significantly cause disability and mortality globally. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In the Americas, these\u00a0 conditions and events are responsible for approximately a third of the total years lived with\u00a0 disability and a fifth of total disability-adjusted life years (DALYs)<\/span>1<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Several Member States are\u00a0 among the top 20% of countries with the highest age standardised DALYs per 100,000\u00a0 population<\/span>2<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The burden is significant in young people, who often struggle with stress, anxiety,\u00a0 and depression. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Nearly 16 million adolescents aged 10-19 live with a mental disorder in Latin\u00a0 America and the Caribbean<\/span>3<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Economic disparities, limited access to mental health services, and cultural stigma contribute to\u00a0 the increased risk of mental illness. <\/span><\/p>\n

Further, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this situation,\u00a0 as mental health issues became more prominent, and mental health services were disrupted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMental health issues are closely linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Caribbean.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

People with mental health problems are at higher risk of developing NCDs, and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 Disorders such as depression can arise with diabetes and heart disease. <\/span><\/p>\n

This interplay between\u00a0 mental health and physical well-being highlights the urgency of addressing mental health as a\u00a0 public health priority,\u201d stated Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health\u00a0 Agency (CARPHA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CARPHA is committed to promoting good mental health in the Caribbean region and supports\u00a0 developing and implementing programs focusing on mental health awareness, prevention, and\u00a0 access to mental health services. <\/span><\/p>\n

The updated CARPHA clinical guidelines for managing diabetes\u00a0 and hypertension emphasise the need to address mental health issues for those living with the\u00a0 NCDs and their caregivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Good mental health and well-being are important components for persons to realise their full\u00a0 potential, participate and contribute to their communities, and workplaces.<\/span><\/p>\n

As such, equitable\u00a0 access to mental health services, public education and awareness about mental illness are critical to supporting these components.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Policymakers are urged to prioritise mental health services and reduce the stigma associated with\u00a0 mental illness to support good mental health in the Caribbean. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mental health issues can\u00a0 significantly impact the management and outcomes of NCDs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthcare professionals should\u00a0 seek to address this profound connection and integrate mental health support into the care of\u00a0 patients with NCDs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Communities and families can provide social support and promote awareness. Individuals can\u00a0 take responsibility for their mental well-being by prioritising sleep, maintaining a healthy diet,\u00a0 engaging in physical activity, and avoiding alcohol and drug abuse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is essential to eliminate the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Persons\u00a0 with mental health challenges have the right to live in their communities and receive appropriate\u00a0 services and support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On World Mental Health Day 2023, remember that \u201cMental Health is a Universal Human Right.\u201d Together, we can create a world where everyone has access to quality mental health care and\u00a0 the opportunity to thrive. <\/span><\/p>\n

World Mental Health Day was first observed in 1992 as the World\u00a0 Federation for Mental Health initiative. <\/span><\/p>\n

Since then, it has grown into a global movement, with\u00a0 various organisations, communities, and individuals joining hands to combat the stigma\u00a0 associated with mental illness and advocate for mental health as a human right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
