Thompson was\u00a0 part of some 25 runners on a very intense first day of the long awaited all-island charity run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 4-day event which comprises an Ultra Marathon 100KM Run; a 21Km Half Marathon Run on\u00a0 Saturday, October 14 and a 10Km walk also on Saturday, aims to raise \u00a3100,000 to bolster\u00a0 paediatric healthcare services provided at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre as well as the Sickkids\u00a0 Caribbean Initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

After a rainy start to Wednesday morning\u2019s run, the determined runners pressed on through the\u00a0 route and closed at Jolly Harbour to cheers from both local and international supporters. <\/span><\/p>

According\u00a0 to Sandals Grande Antigua\u2019s ultra runner Kamar Thomas who crossed day one\u2019s finish line first, the\u00a0 challenges of the road were nothing he wasn\u2019t prepared for. \u201cI know the route well. <\/span><\/p>\n

I probably went\u00a0 harder than I needed to today, considering I still have three days ahead of me. <\/span><\/p>

I think I will try to\u00a0 pace myself over the next two days and close out on Saturday with everything I have left in the\u00a0 tank\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening day\u2019s group also included runners from Sandals affiliate Unique Vacations Inc., UK,\u00a0 Digicel Antigua and Barbuda, alongside several local par<\/span>ticipants who have committed to the 100\u00a0 km 4-day Ultra Marathon across the island.<\/span><\/p>

Heidi Clarke, Executive Director at the Sandals\u00a0 Foundation says she was pleased with how the opening day turned out.<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThis has been such an\u00a0 exciting event to both plan and to be a part of. We definitely saw a few things out there today that\u00a0 we might change going into subsequent days but it has truly been an amazing experience so far\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For local runners Vernon Lyndsay, \u201cIt was tough but I made it through, it was an adventure and\u00a0 overall a good challenge and push.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I think the rains, then sun, and\u00a0 then rains again made a big difference. But it was a good initiative and it\u2019s up to recovery time right\u00a0 now.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event continues today with what promises to be a real test for the participants, as they take on\u00a0 the long incline at Fig Tree Drive before ending at English Harbour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
