\u00a0One of the region\u2019s largest telecommunications and ICT event, CANTO 34th Annual Conference & Trade Exhibition (CANTO 2018) was held recently at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Panama City, Panama.<\/p>

CANTO 2018, the Caribbean\u2019s premier telecommunications event for industry professionals, academics and regional governments was held under the theme \u201cGuiding Digital Adoption to Lead the Global Market\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A key component of the four day event was the Women in ICT Forum highlighting women\u2019s perspectives on leadership, gender equality issues and how to bridge the gaps within the industry. Facilitating the event was former Digicel Antigua and Montserrat CEO Janice Sutherland, who made history by becoming the first female CEO in the telecommunications industry in both countries. Apart from leading panel interviews, Sutherland shared her own experiences of being a female leader for a number of global companies and how she is now utilizing her experience within her own business, Sutherland Coaching and Consulting where she equips and inspires women to advance their careers by developing the confidence, presence and influence needed to drive through leadership barriers and confidently navigate the Board room. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Said Sutherland \u201cEvents like this are incredibly important and play a powerful role in helping to break down the perceived barriers to women in industries that are traditionally seen as the domain of men. Women need a voice and a platform to share their experiences and demonstrate that breaking the glass ceiling is achievable irrespective of your background. It was both an honor and a privilege to be part of such a prestigious event.\u201d<\/p>

With the theme Stepping into Leadership,\u00a0the event saw over 100 women in attendance, along with male participants from major organizations across the Caribbean and the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said Teresa Wankin, Secretary General of CANTO \u201cThe women\u2019s forum gave both men and women in attendance an opportunity to meet and network with women in leadership positions, inspirational speakers and more importantly set the stage for a pilot mentorship program for Caribbean women\u201d.<\/p>

Julian Wilkins, Chairman of CANTO stated that the \u201cStepping into Leadership Women\u2019s forum\u201d was most successful. Wilkins was extremely happy to see how the Women\u2019s Forum has developed over the last few years, and has now taken up an important part of the CANTO Conference. Wilkins noted that it was good to see a number of men in the audience recognizing the need for such a Women\u2019s in ICT Forum. Wilkins concluded that we are looking forward to an even bigger and better Women\u2019s forum at next year\u2019s conference.<\/p>\n
