At a press conference on Wednesday, Minister of Health\u00a0Dr Daniel Rivera said the country will not lower its guard to dengue and he urged islanders to do their part to eliminate breeding grounds for the\u00a0Aedes Aegypti\u00a0mosquito, which is the vector for dengue.<\/p>\n

The country has recorded over 6,000 cases for the year,<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Vice Minister of Collective Health,\u00a0Dr Eladio P\u00e9rez<\/strong>\u00a0said most of the infections were recorded in the urban areas of Santo Domingo Norte, Este, Distrito Nacional and Santiago.\u00a0Approximately 77.8% of reported cases are in individuals under 19 years of age<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He explained that “the climatic conditions that are registered in the country, that is, the heat, the rains and the water stored incorrectly, favour the reproduction of the larvae of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which contributes to the increase in cases.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Public health officials have been in communities conducting public education as well as placing\u00a0<\/em>larvicides\u00a0in water containers and spraying.<\/em><\/p>

P\u00e9rez said there has been some success in the anti-dengue campaign as the numbers of infections are below expectations.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr Jos\u00e9 Luis Cruz<\/strong>\u00a0, director of the Centre for the Prevention and Control of Diseases Transmitted by Vectors\u00a0(CECOVEZ),<\/strong>\u00a0told reporters that\u00a0300 to 600 homes are targeted daily during the anti-mosquito drive.<\/strong><\/p>

Meanwhile, Dr\u00a0Dhamelisse Then<\/strong>, director of the Doctor Hugo Mendoza Paediatric Hospital, is encouraging parents and guardians to seek medical attention immediately when their children show signs of dengue such as a\u00a0fever, vomiting, abdominal pain and dizziness.<\/strong><\/p>

She said the hospital has\u00a0admitted<\/strong>\u00a083\u00a0<\/strong>suspected dengue cases and they receive\u00a0more than 100 patients daily.<\/strong><\/p>\n
