REAL NEWS: Ahead of the opening of schools for the 2023\/2024 academic year, a\u2028new policy to govern students\u2019 hair will be implemented by the\u2028Ministry of Education.<\/p>

Almost every year, discussions have arisen about acceptable\u2028hairstyles and hair length, in particular for male students, some of\u2028whom wear ponytails while others sport dreadlocks.\u2028Now, the Ministry of Education has put out\u00a0its promised new\u2028guidelines on students\u2019 hair, and this will apply to all public schools\u2028with immediate effect.<\/p>\n

The Ministry says that school rules pertaining to hair should be\u2028made within the framework provided and should not discriminate\u2028against students based on the natural texture, length, or natural\u2028colour of their hair.<\/p>

Additionally, hair should be\u00a0clean \u2013 that is, free of foul odour or\u2028contagions; neat, groomed and orderly presented; not pose a health\u2028risk to the student or others; and should not be a distraction to the\u2028general school population.<\/p>

Additionally, a general note for consideration is that schools should\u2028refrain from developing rules that mention an exact hair length.\u2028Officials say the document was created by the Ministry of Education,\u2028following wide-ranging consultations that involved principals and\u2028Parent\/Teachers Associations.<\/p>\n

Reportedly, this new policy was ratified by the Cabinet during its\u2028meeting on Thursday, August 31.<\/p>

According to the Cabinet, the rationale for the new policy is Section\u202849 of the Education Act, 2008, which authorizes public schools to\u2028\u201cintroduce rules to govern the attire, conduct and discipline of\u2028students\u201d, as long as these rules have been approved by the director\u2028of education.<\/p>\n

Section 17(e) of the Act further stipulates that it is the student\u2019s\u2028responsibility to \u201cobserve standards approved by the Director of\u2028Education or the principal, as the case may be, with respect to\u2028cleanliness and tidiness of the person; general deportment; and\u2028attire.\u201d<\/p>

Meanwhile, critics are saying the guidelines are too general and\u2028leave too much up to the principals\u2019 discretion, while one\u2028grandmother tells REAL News she was \u201cexpecting more and better\u201d\u2028than what obtained previously.<\/p>

Last year, one parent even staged a one-man picket outside his son\u2019s\u2028secondary school, because the institution was insisting that the\u2028boy\u2019s hair be cut short. However, the father explained that the\u2028child\u2019s hair had to kept long because of a medical condition, and this\u2028was confirmed by a doctor.<\/p>\n

Another parent was given an ultimatum after having reportedly paid\u2028school fees: Cut off her daughter\u2019s dreadlocks or find her another\u2028primary school.<\/p>\n

While that situation occurred at a private, church-affiliated school,\u2028hundreds of people weighed in against what they deemed to be the\u2028discrimination and short-sightedness of the institution.<\/p>\n

These are \u201creal-life situations that need clear and definitive\u2028statements,\u201d the grandmother says, and she accuses the director of\u2028education of \u201chiding behind words that sound good but say nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further, she says, any policy from the Ministry of Education should\u2028govern all schools, public and private.<\/p>\n

\u201cParents should not have to find the kind of money that private\u2028schools cost simply because the government schools have no\u2028appreciation for their children\u2019s race and culture,\u201d she says. \u201cThat is\u2028discrimination!\u201d<\/p>\n
