CMC – <\/span>Michael Anthony, a prolific author of both fiction and nonfiction as well as a historian, has died. He was 93 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIt is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved father, who passed away peacefully last night at home surrounded by his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael was an icon and a giant in the literary world and his legacy is deeply woven into the tapestry of our nation, which he loved so dearly,\u201d the family said in a statement.<\/p>

\u201cAbove all, Michael was an adoring husband, father and grandfather and we will miss him deeply. We thank you for your well wishes, and we kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>

Culture and Arts Minister, Randall Mitchell, said that Anthony enriched the cultural and social landscape of the country in both word and deed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael Anthony has made an indelible mark on Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s literary landscape and will be remembered for the creative ways in which he passed on Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s history and culture through generations.<\/p>

His years of work as an educator and mentor have undoubtedly inspired and shaped the minds and talents of many today and therefore his legacy will live on,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Anthony was born in Mayaro, a town southeast of here on February 10, 1930. His first book of poems were published by the Trinidad Guardian in 1954, the same year he travelled to the United Kingdom on board the\u00a0Hildebrandt.<\/p>

While in England he held several jobs, including as a sub-editor at Reuters News Agency (1964\u20131968) and developing his career as a writer, writing short stories for the BBC radio programme, Caribbean Voices.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Four years later, Anthony published his first book,\u00a0The Games Were Coming, a cycling story inspired by real events. He followed up its success with\u00a0The Year in San Fernando\u00a0and\u00a0Green Days by the River.<\/p>\n

He eventually returned to Trinidad in 1970, after spending two years as part of the Trinidadian diplomatic corps in Brazil, where his novel\u00a0King of the Masquerade\u00a0is set, and he worked variously as an editor, a researcher for the Ministry of Culture, and as a radio broadcaster of historical programmes.<\/p>\n

In 1992, he spent time at the University of Richmond in the US state of Virginia, teaching creative writing.<\/p>\n

In his five-decade career, Anthony had over 30 titles published, including novels, collections of short fiction, books for younger readers, travelogues and histories.<\/p>\n

He has also been a contributor to many anthologies and journals, including\u00a0Caribbean Prose,\u00a0Island Voices,\u00a0Stories from the Caribbean,\u00a0Response,\u00a0The Sun\u2019s Eyes,\u00a0West Indian Narrative,\u00a0The Bajan, and BIM magazine.<\/p>\n

In 1979, Anthony was awarded the Hummingbird Medal\u00a0\u00a0(Gold) for his contributions to literature, and he received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in 2003.<\/p>\n

He was married to Yvette Phillips and they had four children \u2014 Jennifer, Keith, Carlos and Sandra.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
