Fifteen cricketers from the Antigua and Barbuda Under-19 cricket team\u00a0 recently returned from an enriching and transformative tour of England and Scotland.<\/span><\/p>

The tour\u00a0 provided the young cricketers with valuable playing and educational opportunities that left an\u00a0 indelible mark on their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team’s Manager, Ridley Jacobs, receives a token of appreciation at the end of a match from the opposing team’s manager.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Although the weather throughout their time in the UK was not ideal, with several matches rained out or affected by rain, the team was able to complete matches in London, Nottingham, Leicester and\u00a0 Scotland.<\/span><\/p>

The cold and often wet conditions helped them to build stamina and get a taste of the\u00a0 challenges of playing in different and difficult conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

This enabled the young cricketers to measure\u00a0 their skills against international counterparts and gain first-hand exposure to the high standard of\u00a0 cricket played in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

One of the tour’s highlight was the team’s visit to the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, also known as the\u00a0 Home of Cricket, as part of a special education day.<\/span><\/p>

The young players participated in interactive\u00a0 educational sessions led by consultant neurologist Dr Naheed Khan on the real effects of recreational\u00a0 substances on the brain and Nick Gandon about using the coaching and playing of cricket to develop\u00a0 personal character and essential life skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The team also had the privilege of a guided tour of Lord\u2019s where they were able to see portraits, photos\u00a0 and match statistics of revered West Indian cricket icons such as Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Curtly\u00a0 Ambrose, Sir Andy Roberts and Brian Lara, all prominently displayed. <\/span><\/p>\n

This encounter with the images\u00a0 of these cricketing legends directly connected the young players to the rich heritage of West Indian\u00a0 cricket and served as a source of inspiration for their own early journey in competitive cricket. <\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0 players also attended a double header of The Hundred Cricket Tournament at Lord\u2019s as guests of the\u00a0 Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking of the Tour, the Honourable Daryll Matthew, Minister of Education, Sports and the Creative\u00a0 Industries stated, \u201cThis tour is part of an annual strategic initiative by the Government to propel the\u00a0 growth of our Under-19 cricket programme. <\/span><\/p>\n

By immersing the players in diverse cricketing\u00a0 environments and exposing them to a high level of global competition, we are building local capacity\u00a0 in both the playing and administration of youth cricket.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to extend thanks to High\u00a0 Commissioner Karen-Mae Hill for designing the full programme of activities for the team and to her\u00a0 staff, especially Brent Scotland, for supporting the daily needs of the team while in the UK\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ministry of Education, Sports and the Creative Industries and the Antigua and Barbuda High\u00a0 Commission in London expressed their gratitude to all partners, supporters, and well-wishers. <\/span><\/p>\n

They\u00a0 reiterated their commitment to nurturing young cricketing talent and providing them with\u00a0 transformative experiences that go beyond the cricket field.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team was led by Ridley Jacobs,\u00a0 Sylvester \u2018Bouncing\u2019 Joseph, Evans \u2018Jawakie\u2019 Jones and Pernell Watley.<\/span><\/p>\n
