Can you show me what to do with myself now that my daughter is leaving home?\u2019\u201d Schahaff, a life coach, tells\u00a0TODAY.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very depressed about what was happening.\u201d<\/p>

One day, Schahaff came across a special opportunity: a trip to space on Virgin Galactic\u2019s \u201cGalactic 02\u201d private astronaut flight, organized by the non-profit\u00a0Space for Humanity<\/a>.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Schahaff knew it was a sign that her life was about to change.<\/p>\n

<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cAs a 2-year-old child, I would look up at the skies (wishing) to be there,\u201d says Schahaff. \u201cI wanted to work in the space industry but I didn\u2019t get good grades in science class.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

My career went in another direction but I always felt like something was missing.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Schahaff wound up winning a ticket for herself and one guest. Since Mayers is studying philosophy and physics at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and plans to become an astrobiologist one day, she was the perfect astronaut.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cMy daughter said, \u2018If anyone is going to space with you, it\u2019s me,\u2019\u201d says Schahaff.<\/p>\n

\u201cHad she picked someone else, I would have had to fight them for it!\u201d Mayers, 18, tells TODAY.com.<\/p>\n

On August 10, 2023, \u201cGalactic 02\u201d took off from Spaceport America in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, with Schahaff\u2019s mom observing in a crowd in her home country of Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean,\u00a0alongside Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Both were in tears.<\/p>\n

Mayers is the youngest person to visit space, and together, they are the first Caribbean residents and the 6th and 7th Black women to enter space, according to\u00a0Virgin Galactic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The women were accompanied by ticket winner Jon Goodwin, 80, a British Olympic canoeist.<\/p>\n

Schahaff says her world perspective flipped while floating aboard the spacecraft with her daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cLooking back at our planet, the weight of insecurity, self-doubt and other worries came off,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt felt like there was a place for me in our world. It left me with feelings of peace, love and purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Any mom worries (\u201cwhat if, what if\u201d) fell away as they prepared for the unknown together.<\/p>\n

\u201cI focused only on the positives, because I felt like whatever I focused on would come,” says Schahaff.<\/p>\n

“Ana made her own decision (to join me) and I trusted that the universe knew best. And it worked out in my favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Their journey to the stars brought them closer, says Mayers.<\/p>\n

\n

“We can relate to each other more now.”<\/p>\n

Mayers says the trip changed her forever.<\/p>\n

“I’m not as stressed about where I need to be in life, from studying or getting a job,” she says. “I’m now focused on having meaningful experiences.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
