An official deadline to evacuate the city \u2013 the capital of Canada\u2019s Northwest Territories \u2013 lapsed on Friday.<\/div>\n

A local official said later that day that nearly all residents had left, either by car or plane.<\/div>\n

About 19,000 of the city\u2019s 20,000 inhabitants had evacuated, the territories\u2019 environment and communities minister Shane Thompson told reporters.<\/p>

He warned that the highways and airport could be impacted by the wildfires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In British Columbia, evacuation orders grew from covering 4,000 homes on Friday afternoon to about 15,000 in the space of an hour. Another 20,000 homes are under alert.<\/p>\n

Premier of the province, David Eby, said that evening that the situation had \u201cevolved rapidly\u201d and officials were braced for \u201can extremely challenging situation in the days ahead\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis year, we\u2019re facing the worst #BCWildfire season ever,\u201d Eby wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. \u201cGiven these fast-moving conditions, we are declaring a provincial state of emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The premier said this would ensure \u201cthat we\u2019re in a position to rapidly access any tools we need to support communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He said that more and more people were being evacuated, warning that \u201cemergency orders could include travel restrictions to specific areas if people do not respect our calls to avoid non-essential travel\u201d.<\/div>\n

Canada is having its worst wildfire season on record, with at least 1,000 fires burning across the country, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Experts say climate change increases the risk of the hot, dry weather that is likely to fuel wildfires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Extreme and long-lasting heat draws more and more moisture out of the ground \u2013 which can provide fuel for fires that can spread at an incredible speed, particularly if winds are strong.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Earlier, West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund described the wildfire as \u201cdevastating\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe fought hard last night to protect our community. We fought 100 years worth of fires all in one night,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Local officials have already reported \u201csignificant structural loss\u201d in the area, including in Trader\u2019s Cove, just north of West Kelowna.<\/div>\n

No deaths have been reported so far.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Juliana Loewen lives in Kelowna \u2013 a larger twin city of West Kelowna on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake.<\/p>\n

She told the BBC how locals had watched a plume of smoke coming over the mountainside like an \u201cominous cloud of destruction\u201d and how some on the Trader\u2019s Cove side jumped into the lake as the fire spread and exit routes were blocked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Her brother and grandmother fled to her house after \u201cthe fire jumped very quickly from one tree to an entire area, threatening an entire residential community\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Local residents are used to the fires because of a \u201cCalifornia-style climate\u201d in the area \u2013 but the heat, dryness and wind seen in recent days had created the \u201cperfect conditions for a firestorm\u201d, Loewen added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The airspace around Kelowna International Airport has now been closed to everything other than aerial firefighters.<\/p>\n
