TTG Media – For most, a first visit to the Caribbean (or long-haul trip for that matter) would usually consist of sun, sand and relaxation. Hays Travel apprentice Ryan Irving is preparing for an altogether different experience.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been, by his own admission, a \u201cwhirlwind\u201d few weeks for the 20-year-old agent after he was chosen to represent the company for the gruelling 100km Island Run challenge in Antigua in October, organised by the Sandals Foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Irving, along with a team from Sandals\u2019 sales and marketing representatives, Unique Vacations UK, will be packing his trainers ready to take on four back-to-back days running over a half marathon on each to raise \u00a3100,000 to help fund medical equipment and resources to treat sick children in the Caribbean.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Despite the daunting distance and energy-sapping heat, he\u2019s raring to go.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all been a bit mind-blowing,\u201d Irving, who works at Hays\u2019 Ashington branch near Newcastle, tells <\/span>TTG<\/span><\/i>. \u201cI\u2019ve never been anywhere like Antigua before \u2013 I\u2019ve never been long-haul \u2013 and I\u2019ve never run that many miles before!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy regional sales manager called me to tell me the news and ask if I still wanted to do it, and the only word I could say was \u2018absolutely, absolutely, absolutely!\u2019 Having this chance has given me so much motivation. I just can\u2019t wait to get on the plane.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The Island Run sees runners covering more than 15 miles each day as they make their way around Antigua, visiting a number of its most famous locations \u2013 from Dickenson Bay and Jolly Harbour to Nelson\u2019s Dockyard and the Sir Viv Richards Cricket Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n

A keen cross-country runner during his school days, Irving says his training has been \u201cgoing well\u201d as he builds up his mileage, currently running around 10km a day.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Although there is one obstacle for which he can\u2019t prepare\u2026<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe one thing you can\u2019t train for is the heat \u2013 especially where I live and with the weather this summer!\u201d laughs Irving.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve done cross-country runs in torrential rain but this is something entirely different \u2013 I\u2019m trying to take everything in my stride, though.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exciting \u2013 if exhausting \u2013 opportunity is a world away from the position Irving found himself in a few just a year ago as he completed his travel and tourism college course amid the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a passion for travel, he was always attracted by the industry but prior to joining Hays, spent time work in a hospital as an apprentice healthcare assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt really wasn\u2019t for me,\u201d he recalls. \u201cIt was a difficult time to be working there and there really wasn\u2019t anything to smile about.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always loved travel, and this first year has been brilliant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having marked his first year anniversary with Hays at the end of July, having the chance to represent the company is \u201cvery special\u201d, with Irving believing his past charity work as a student one of the reasons he was chosen.<\/span><\/p>\n

A beach party celebration at the end of the challenge will be held at Sandals Grande Antigua<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the Island Run, runners will visit projects supported by the Sandals Foundation at the end of each day to see the difference money raised is making to children and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one of the parts of the experience I\u2019m most looking forward to.<\/span><\/p>\n

The runs will be hard and get harder as the week goes on but being able to see first-hand why we\u2019re doing it and see how it\u2019s changing people\u2019s lives is amazing and it will all be worth it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
