In life, we come across <\/span>individuals who leave a profound <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>impact, shaping not only our personal <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and professional lives but also our entire <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>communities. Today, as we gather to bid <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a heartfelt farewell to my esteemed past <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>principal, boss, and mentor, I take this <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>opportunity to honor a visionary leader, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a compassionate mentor, and a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cherished friend. <\/span><\/p>\n

This tribute serves as a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reflection of the indelible mark that Dr. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Austin Josiah has left behind and a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>celebration of his legacy as my mentor <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and friend. <\/span><\/p>

I first met Dr. Austin Josiah,<\/span> the principal of Bethesda School when I <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>began my teaching career as a math <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and science teacher. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Within the first <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>year, I was in awe of his leadership, and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I knew that he would have an <\/span>empowering impact on my professional<\/span> journey as a teacher. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This tribute is an opportunity for <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>me to acknowledge his exemplary <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leadership and unwavering vision. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Dr. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Josiah was committed to the school <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>community. He possessed a unique <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ability to inspire and motivate everyone <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he worked with toward achieving <\/span>excellence. <\/span><\/p>\n

Through his visionary <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>guidance, he instilled a sense of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>purpose in every student and staff, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reminding us to always aim high, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>embrace challenges, and work <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>collectively towards a common goal. <\/span><\/p>

He <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was passionate about educating every <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>student, ensuring that educating the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>whole child extended beyond the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>textbooks. <\/span>In addition to doing well in <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>every subject, it was essential that every <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>student know and understand local, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>regional, and international events.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

I <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>remember that during the Gulf War <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(1990-1991) when the USA and 38 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>other countries waged a military <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>coalition against the Iraqi invasion of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kuwait, Dr. Josiah was relentless in his <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>efforts to ensure that every student took <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>time to know and understand what, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>where, and why of this historical event.<\/span><\/p>\n

His drive for constant improvement \u00a0ignited a transformative journey in the \u00a0school community and impacted \u00a0countless lives, including students, \u00a0teachers, and parents.<\/p>\n

Dr. Josiah not only prioritized <\/span>academic excellence but also devoted <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his entire life to empowering and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>celebrating students. <\/span><\/p>\n

He recognized the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>importance of education in shaping <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>future generations and worked tirelessly <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to provide a nurturing and inclusive <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>environment. <\/span><\/p>\n

Through different <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>innovative programs and initiatives, he<\/span> sought to cultivate the potential of every <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>student, encouraging them to explore <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their passions and talents.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1990, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when I wanted the school to participate <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in the Mr. And Miss Teenage Pageant, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he did not hesitate to support my <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ambitions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although he was not a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>carnival enthusiast, he ensured that I <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>had access to the students for practice<\/span> and preparation. Kevin Potter and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sharon Grigg were the first two students <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>from Bethesda School to participate in <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the Mr. And Miss Teenage pageant. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Both students represented the school at <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>its highest level.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kevin\u2019s talent was a\u00a0<\/span>dramatic portrayal of Mr. Josiah as a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>school leader, entitled, \u201cSchool Days are <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Happy, Happy Days\u201d. By the end of the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>show, Kevin was crowned Mr. Teenage <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>1990 with the best personality and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>aspirations and best-performing talent. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bethesda school had become the first <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>primary\/junior secondary school to win <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the Mr. Teenage title.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Josiah\u2019s<\/span> dedication to the holistic development of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>everyone served as a constant reminder <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of the impact that education can have <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on celebrating and empowering our <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>students\u2019 abilities, talents, and skills. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Josiah was a disciplinarian <\/span>who believed in the words of Proverbs<\/span> 22:15, \u201cFoolishness is bound up in the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>heart of a child, the rod of correction will <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>drive it far from him.\u201d Although he was <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>never afraid to use the rod, he <\/span>understood the difference between <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>formal and informal discipline and when <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to use each.<\/span><\/p>\n

He understood the role of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>values, rules, and consequences in a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>school system and how to address the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>underlying causes of discipline problems <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that occur both in and out of school.<\/span><\/p>\n

He <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>knew how to balance discipline and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>care, communicating expectations and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>interacting with students and parents. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>His disciplinary acts were always with <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>unwavering compassion, support, and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>love. <\/span><\/p>\n

He believed in the power of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>empathy and took time to understand <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the struggles and concerns of both <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>students and staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

He fostered a culture <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of openness, ensuring that everyone felt <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>heard, valued, and supported. His <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>innate ability to uplift spirits and offer <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>guidance during difficult times provided <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>comfort and reassurance to all, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>especially students.<\/span><\/p>\n

His legacy as a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>compassionate and caring leader will <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>continue to inspire me to extend a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>helping hand to others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As I use this tribute to say <\/span>goodbye to Dr. Austin Josiah, I embrace <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the profound impact that he had on my <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>life, influencing my desire to learn to the <\/span>highest level. When the achievement of <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>my doctorate degree was announced, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he was filled with great joy. <\/span><\/p>\n

Within the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>last week of his life, he took time to <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>speak with me, sharing his excitement <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and advising me on the next steps of my <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>professional career. His leadership, <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>vision, and dedication to education will <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>forever be etched in my heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

I will <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>continue to carry forward the values and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ideals he instilled in me, striving to make <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a positive difference in my life and the <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lives of those around me. Though I <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mourn his loss today, his memory will <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>forever serve as a guiding light, uplifting <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and inspiring me as I continue his <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>meaningful work as an educator and an<\/span> advocate for students and teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, I celebrate a remarkable life \u2013 a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>life that touched hearts, influenced <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>minds, and left an undeniable legacy <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>behind.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am thankful for his life and all <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his words of wisdom and inspiration that <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he shared with me through the years. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>may his spirit continue to inspire us as <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>we navigate the path ahead with <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reverence, gratitude, and a deep sense <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of commitment to his vision as a <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>teacher, principal, educator, and mentor. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
