CMC – <\/span>Former Haitian president, Boniface Alexandre, died on Friday at the age of 87 \u2013 four days after his birthday.<\/span><\/p>

Alexandre, a former interim President of Haiti from 2004 to 2006,\u00a0\u00a0served as the President of the Cour de Cassation when, in 2004, Jean-Bertrand Aristide was overthrown for the second time.<\/p>\n

Trained as a lawyer, he worked for a law firm in Port-au-Prince for 25 years before being appointed to the Supreme Court in 1992.<\/p>

In 2002, Aristide appointed him as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Following Aristide\u2019s removal in 2004, Haiti faced a constitutional challenge, as there was no Vice President, the Constitution stipulated that the line of succession continued with the Presiding Magistrate of the Court on a provisional basis.<\/p>\n

The purpose was to hold elections within three months, however, an election was not held and during this period, the country grappled with various forms of street violence, involving both gangs supported by Aristide and rival groups, including ex-military forces.<\/p>

In response to the volatile situation, the UN Security Council voted to establish MINUSTAH (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti), which arrived in June of the same year.<\/p>\n

On May 14, 2006,\u00a0\u00a0Alexandre handed over power to Ren\u00e9 Preval in the elections held in that year.<\/p>
