REAL NEWS: The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is refuting claims\u2028that a tsunami warning was issued on Monday, July 10, following the\u2028passage of an earthquake that afternoon.<\/p>

The tremor was felt at about 4:28 p.m., here in Antigua and Barbuda,\u2028and in at least 10 other Caribbean islands, with\u00a0locals describing it\u2028as being long and heavy.<\/p>\n

One agency measured the quake at 6.6 on the Richter Scale, while\u2028others reported a magnitude of 6.4 and even of 5.1. Reportedly, it\u2028occurred at a depth of 10 km and a location of 20 degrees north and\u202861 degrees west.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

It appears that an international social-media blogger ran with the\u2028information, advising followers that a dangerous situation had\u2028developed in the Caribbean and that a tsunami warning had been\u2028issued.<\/p>

The man claimed that many of the detection systems had been going\u2028off, following what he described as a mega earthquake.\u00a0\u2028Persons who saw the almost two-minute TikTok video said they\u2028were unaware that the island had been placed on a tsunami\u2028warning.<\/p>\n

NODS Public Relations Officer\u00a0Midcie Francis says that people\u2028should be careful about the sources\u00a0of information coming from\u2028social media and investigate their validity.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Francis says that NODS is the agency that would disseminate such\u2028information, and there was no need to do, since there was no\u2028immediate threat of a tsunami.<\/p>\n

NODS is aware that people\u2019s lives might be at risk if information\u2028does not reach them in a timely manner, Francis says. And since\u2028residents\u2019 safety is of the utmost importance, once the agency\u2028receives such information it will be passed on to the public.<\/p>

In the meantime, Francis says it is very important that residents not\u2028be fooled by persons seeking attention via online platforms. Rather,\u2028they should listen to trusted local, regional, or international news\u2028agencies for accurate information.<\/p>

Francis says the official alert system for NODS is the Common\u2028Alerting Protocol (CAP). The App can be downloaded to residents\u2019\u2028smart phones for official notification about any pending disasters,\u2028such as tsunami warnings, as well as hurricane watches.<\/p>\n

She says that NODS has a very close relationship with members of\u2028the local media; and, on a regular basis, information is shared with\u2028these journalists for dissemination to the public.<\/p>\n
