Twenty-three (23) Member States were\u00a0 represented at the Regional Health Communication Network (RHCN) Meeting hosted by\u00a0 the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The meeting, which took place from 5- 6 July at the Radisson Hotel in Barbados, was attended by health communicators and\u00a0 health promotion specialists from across the English, French and Dutch Caribbean\u00a0 countries and territories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the two (2) day workshop, participants utilised case studies and simulation\u00a0 exercises to assist in building capacity to respond and develop infodemic management\u00a0 interventions; understand the impact of infodemic management; learn to detect and\u00a0 understand the spread and impact of infodemics.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The meeting also provided the\u00a0 opportunity for participants to strengthen their country\u2019s risk communication plans through\u00a0 the development of a framework for infodemic management.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Monitoring and evaluation\u00a0 of projects was also part of the training agenda.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Chair of the opening session, Dr. Mark Sami, Director of Corporate Services at CARPHA, welcomed participants stating, \u201cthe goal of the meeting is to support the strengthening of\u00a0 risk communication in Member States by focusing on skills needed in infodemic\u00a0 management, which we all would agree is extremely critical given the difficulty that\u00a0 persons faced in finding clear messages and trustworthy sources during the COVID-19\u00a0 pandemic\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Dr. Joy St. John, CARPHA Executive Director stated \u201cThis year\u2019s focus on infodemic\u00a0 management aims to ensure that people have the right information at the right time in the\u00a0 right format.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It is your job to ensure that they are informed, empowered and not\u00a0 overpowered by a tsunami of junk. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Your messages have to bring about behavioural\u00a0 changes during epidemics to protect their health and the health of their loved ones and\u00a0 communities\u201d. <\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Dr. St. John urged participants to foster community outreach and\u00a0 engagement.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet us all remember that the ultimate impact of all the public health efforts\u00a0 we are making is to change the behaviour of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n

The community is our largest\u00a0 partner; therefore, we must go where the people are.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his welcome remarks, Mr. Wayne Marshall, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of\u00a0 Health in Barbados said \u201cThis focus on infodemic management is still timely, as we need\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

always to be prepared to manage the flow of health-related information in these times of\u00a0 expanded social media and internet use.<\/span><\/p>\n

Infodemic management is imperative in helping\u00a0 to reduce the impact on health behaviour during emergencies.<\/span><\/p>\n

The use of evidence-based\u00a0 analyses and approaches is necessary as we seek to build capacity to manage\u00a0 information and protect the health of our Region. We must be able to engage, empower\u00a0 and listen to our communities\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pledging her support, Ms. Tina Purnat, Team Lead, Infodemic Management, World Health\u00a0 Organization said \u201cIt is a pleasure to see how the investment and the importance of the\u00a0 health communication network in your region is not only in sharing health information in\u00a0 communities, but also sharing experiences and working strategically on building capacity\u00a0 amongst yourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There are tools that you will be able to learn over the next two days\u00a0 that I hope will be useful to you. <\/span><\/p>\n

We will be happy to bring your experience and your\u00a0 feedback back into our global network for infodemic management where we discuss and\u00a0 make sure that the tools and assistance amongst members are the best possible\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The RHCN was established by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) in 2015\u00a0 to develop, implement, sustain, monitor and evaluate communication responses to priority\u00a0 health issues in the Region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The meeting was funded by the 11<\/span>th <\/span>EDF – Regional Health Security Project which is\u00a0 implemented by CARPHA.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
