The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency says officers from its Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Newark, New Jersey Field Office arrested several Caribbean nationals among 37 immigrants during a five-day operation.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

On Monday,\u00a0<\/b>ICE said\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>the operation, which\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>concluded Friday, was as part of the agency\u2019s \u201congoing public safety efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Caribbean immigrants arrested were from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Others arrested were from Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru and Turkey.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cThe operation targeted criminal aliens who were previously incarcerated at the Middlesex County Jail (MCJ), and who were subsequently released to the community by MCJ, without honoring the ICE detainer or advising ICE of their release,\u201d ICE said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe operation also targeted other criminal aliens residing in Middlesex County (New Jersey),\u201d it added.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an ICE detainer\u2014or \u201cimmigration hold\u201d\u2014is one of the key tools ICE uses to apprehend individuals who come in contact with local and state law enforcement agencies and put them into the US federal deportation system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ACLU further said that an ICE detainer is \u201ca written request that a local jail or other law enforcement agency detain an individual for an additional 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) after his or her release date in order to provide ICE agents extra time to decide whether to take the individual into federal custody for removal purposes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cICE\u2019s use of detainers to imprison people without due process and, in many cases, without any charges pending or probable cause of any violation, has raised serious constitutional concerns,\u201d the ACLU said.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Of those arrested in the latest immigration sweep, ICE said 16 subjects had been previously released by MCJ without honoring the ICE detainer and 78 percent had prior criminal convictions or pending criminal charges.<\/p>\n

The immigrants arrested range from 21 to 68 years old, and all were previously arrested or convicted of a variety of offenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ICE said some of the arrests and convictions included: aggravated criminal sexual contact, aggravated assault, driving under the influence (DUI), hindering apprehension, endangering the welfare of a child, battery, theft, burglary, possession of a weapon, forgery, domestic violence assault, disorderly conduct and illegal entry.<\/p>\n
