And the vote wasn’t even close, according\u00a0to the SBC’s\u00a0tally.<\/p>\n

Spurred on by arch-conservatives in the SBC, the 12,000 or so “messengers” who had gathered at their annual meeting in New Orleans voted by a 9-to-1 margin to seal the exit of California’s Saddleback Church and a smaller congregation in Kentucky.<\/p>

That vote, which was conducted Tuesday, set the stage for another vote Wednesday to amend the SBC’s constitution to specify that Southern Baptists churches must \u201caffirm, appoint or employ only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

That too passed with a two-thirds majority and will go into effect after it is approved at the next annual SBC meeting.<\/p>\n

Sarah Clatworthy, a member of Lifepoint Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas, who has called on the SBC \u201cto shut the door to feminism and liberalism,” said she supported the ban on woman pastors.<\/p>

\u201cWe should leave no room for our daughters and granddaughters in the generations ahead to have confusion on where the SBC stands,\u201d\u00a0she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet them know Scripture is our authority and not the culture.\u201d<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Earlier,\u00a0<\/strong>SBC President Bart Barber defended the vote to expel the churches and noted that the Roman Catholic Church also does not allow women to serve as pastors or priests.<\/p>

“We believe that every believer is a priest,” said Barber. “We have women who served as messengers.<\/p>\n

It’s just the Scriptures say the office of pastor is limited to men.”<\/p>\n

Saddleback\u00a0Church, a megachurch based in Southern California with a flock of around 23,000, was founded by Rick Warren, author of the bestselling phenomenon \u201cThe Purpose Driven Life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The church drew the ire of the SBC after it\u00a0ordained three women\u00a0as\u00a0pastors\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n

But the vote to declare the Saddleback Church “not to be in friendly cooperation” with the denomination was due to \u201cthe church continuing to have a female teaching pastor functioning in the office of a pastor,” the SBC said in a statement.<\/p>\n

That was a reference to Stacie Wood, the wife of Warren\u2019s successor, Andy Wood, the SBC said.<\/p>\n

Dismissing a personal appeal by Warren, the male and female attendees at the convention voted 9,437 to 1,212 to uphold the expulsion of the Saddleback Church, which happened in February.<\/p>\n

Afterward, a disappointed Warren said “there are people who want to take the SBC back to the 1950s when\u00a0white men ruled supreme\u00a0and when the woman\u2019s place was in the home.”<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cMessengers voted for conformity and uniformity rather than unity,” Warren added at a news conference.<\/p>\n

“The only way you will have unity is to love diversity. We made this effort knowing we were not going to win.”<\/p>\n

The Southern Baptists also voted 9,700 to 806 to deny an appeal by the Fern Creek Baptist Church of Louisville, Kentucky, which has been led by the Rev. Linda Barnes Popham for three decades.<\/p>\n

When asked why the SBC did not move to expel this church sooner, Barber said the denomination has never been in favor of having women serve as pastors and that they were hoping Fern Creek would “clarify” Popham’s role on its own.<\/p>\n

Popham told\u00a0The Associated Press\u00a0that said she doesn\u2019t know whether her church will join a new denomination or remain independent and added: \u201cI also believe God has great things for Fern Creek Baptist.\u201d<\/p>\n

While all Baptist churches are independent,\u00a0\u00a0The AP\u00a0reported that this is believed to be the first time the SBC has expelled any churches over having female pastors.<\/p>\n

The SBC has also expelled Freedom Church, which is located in Vero Beach, Florida, for failing “to cooperate to resolve concerns regarding an abuse allegation” involving a male senior pastor who\u00a0allegedly preyed on female parishioners.<\/p>\n
