Berlusconi, who had a recent history of health issues, had recently been\u00a0diagnosed with leukemia, Milan\u2019s San Raffaele Hospital said.<\/p>

He had been admitted to the hospital before with breathing problems, and\u00a0attended a check-up there\u00a0on Friday.<\/p>\n

The politician, who was long regarded as Italy\u2019s most colorful public figure, was elected prime minister three times and served for a total of nine years, longer than anyone since fascist dictator Benito Mussolini.<\/p>
