With a commitment to protecting the Caribbean’s\u00a0 breathtaking natural resources and the unique ecosystems that support their health, the Sandals\u00a0 Foundation engaged schools across Antigua in commemoration of World Oceans Day to help\u00a0 students develop an appreciation for the biodiversity of the aquatic space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

With the use of marine-focused worksheets, story books and other fun learning materials, grade\u00a0 three students from the Villa, Greenbay and Cedar Grove Primary Schools journeyed to Sandals\u00a0 Grande Antigua Resort and were engaged on a cross section of topics including plastic pollution,\u00a0 overfishing, marine sanctuary management, as well as biodiversity and coral health and function.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“Environmental education is a big part of wha<\/span>t we do at the Sandals Foundation because informed\u00a0 people can make better decisions,” said Georgia Scarlett, the Sandals Foundation’s Environmental\u00a0 Projects Coordinator.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“In keeping with this year\u2019s theme for World Oceans Day which speaks to the need for us to conserve our wonderful marine resources for future generation it was important for us to engage children across the region through environmental education sessions.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

By empowering children to take action for environmental protection, we are creating a strong platform for the sustained protection of our region’s natural resources,” she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Julia James, teacher at Greenbay Primary School was elated to have the Sandals Foundation\u00a0 Ambassadors engage students in this manner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cIt was very interactive and refreshing for the students. The awareness and educational value that\u00a0 came of the session was more than what I initially expected. The facilitator really encapsulated the\u00a0 message and importance of our marine spaces \u2013 the importance of them and how we should protect\u00a0 them. <\/span><\/p>\n

I was truly impressed with this session and I honestly think this experience of bringing the\u00a0 students outside of the traditional classroom setting for learning should be something that the\u00a0 Foundation continues to strive for as my students were thoroughly focused and engaged.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

For 9-year-old Shadrah Modeste the day\u2019s session was enlightening as he said, \u201cI am happy my\u00a0 school was invited to be a part of this session.<\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

I was able to learn about the coral reefs and how to\u00a0 protect it and what can happen if we don\u2019t save our reefs. I also really enjoyed the reading and\u00a0 comprehension activity and that some of us kids won prizes for participating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Training and Development Manager Carlene Spencer and avid Sandals Foundation Ambassador\u00a0 described the day\u2019s proceedings as a success noting, \u201cAs a former educator, I was very excited at\u00a0 facilitate the session with the students. <\/span><\/p>\n

They were engaging and understood exactly what was being\u00a0 presented to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

During the question and answer segments the students shared passionately on\u00a0 how they can protect our reefs and the importance of them for the environment. What resonated in\u00a0 my opinion with the students was the fact that they can create a change just by playing their part in\u00a0 information sharing and getting involved in groups that support a cause.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years, the Sandals Foundation has led and supported numerous initiatives geared towards\u00a0 increasing environmental education in schools and communities across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Together with\u00a0 partners – Environment Awareness Group (EAG) the philanthropic organsiation has continuously\u00a0 supported connecting students with their outdoors through the EAG\u2019s Floating Classroom field\u00a0 trips. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The activity provides a one-of-a-kind experience to students in Antigua and Barbuda to\u00a0 explore the wonders of wetlands and terrestrial wildlife.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Similar World Oceans Day activities were held across the islands of The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos\u00a0 Islands, Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia, and Grenada, by teams of Sandals Foundation Ambassadors.<\/span><\/p>\n
