concern. \u00a0FBDs are a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and economic burden of countries.<\/p><div id=\"antig-2805520068\" class=\"antig-content_5 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ablpag\" aria-label=\"ABLP_Red-&#038;-Reddy_Web_1000x250\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:1000\/h:250\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ABLP_Red-Reddy_Web_1000x250.png\" alt=\"\" borne illness reported to CARPHA from its Member States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reducing FBDs would increase food safety, which will contribute to enhancing food security, a key sustainable development goal.\u00a0 Food safety is also a significant health security issue since FBDs can rapidly spread across borders with travel and trade.<\/p><div id=\"antig-1851875562\" significant economic, social, and reputational impact on trade and tourism.<\/p><div id=\"antig-3184412214\" class=\"antig-content antig-entity-placement\"><a 696px\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1124\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">A Caribbean burden of Illness study among a subset of CARPHA Member States (not including Haiti) estimated that yearly, about 1 in 49 persons in the Caribbean (approximately 142,000 persons) will\u00a0acquire a foodborne illness due to possible consumption of a contaminated food or drink.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This proportion increases to 1 in 11 persons during mass gathering events for which the multi-cultural Caribbean is well noted.<\/p><div id=\"antig-2291709003\" class=\"antig-content_2 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.com\/antigua\/\" aria-label=\"IMG_0783\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:500\/h:500\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_0783.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:500\/h:500\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_0783.png 500w, width=\"500\" height=\"500\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">These include \u201climes\u201d, carnival, cricket, food fairs or festivals and holiday celebrations.\u00a0 Moreover, over 40% of the cases are children 1-4 years of age. The estimated economic cost of gastroenteritis (the major symptoms of foodborne illness) was USD$21M\/year, indicating the huge health and economic burden that gastroenteritis and foodborne diseases pose to the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pathogens commonly transmitted to humans through contaminated food and water include\u00a0<em>Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli 0157, Listeria, Norovirus\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0Giardia<\/em>.<\/p><div id=\"antig-3325178924\" class=\"antig-content_3 antig-entity-placement\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.com\/antigua\/\" aria-label=\"1000436969\"><img src=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:864\/h:1080\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000436969.jpg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:864\/h:1080\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000436969.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:240\/h:300\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000436969.jpg 240w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:819\/h:1024\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000436969.jpg 819w, https:\/\/mlavawteztbj.i.optimole.com\/w:768\/h:960\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/antiguanewsroom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1000436969.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most FBDs are zoonoses, which are infectious diseases transmissible under natural conditions between animals and humans, hence their source is often at the farm level. When food safety standards are applied consumers will be protected by the efforts that have been undertaken in making sure that the food they consume is safer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Food Safety Day which is observed annually on 7<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0June, aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe\u202ffood\u202fpractices and to highlight the global need for safe food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another factor that can influence food safety is climate change which causes long-term changes in weather patterns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Climate change can affect the abundance and transmission of food and water borne pathogens, particularly following disaster related events such as storms and extreme flooding.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over time, the international scientific community is building evidence on the links between climate change and food safety, but the risks for the Caribbean and the ability of the Region to respond to climate driven food related outbreaks have not been fully assessed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Joy St. John, Executive Director at the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) states, \u201cthe Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change on food safety and food security.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Region must come together using a focused, multisectoral approach to mitigate the impacts of climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">CARPHA is currently working under the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) coordinated EU\/CARIFORUM\u00a0<em>Strengthening Climate Resilient Health Systems in the Caribbean project,\u00a0<\/em>to jointly roll out climate integrated food safety initiatives in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the project a series of videos have been produced including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=datehFJPvDw\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v%3DdatehFJPvDw&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1686256484260000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2q02Y6PV9AKGiyARc0K_Ym\">Climate risks and food safety<\/a>.
