The King is <\/span><\/span>dead<\/span><\/span>! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Long Live The King! <\/span><\/span><\/p>

They say a King has no <\/span><\/span>honour<\/span><\/span> in his country<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>and so did this mortal who I have been asked eulogized today, who <\/span><\/span>lived <\/span><\/span>and experienced <\/span><\/span>the joy, pain and agony of those who adorned him and those who mistrust his genius.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Whether or not you knew his christened names were <\/span><\/span>Tony Troy Jerry Hurst; or you though it was Steve Hurst, alias <\/span><\/span>\u201cChicken\u201d, <\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d or \u201cGeorge Prang\u201d or simply \u201cPrang\u201d one thing you would not disagree with is that has etched an indelible mark on every playfield he walked-on; a legion of footballers \u2013 past and present \u2013 and has written his own chapter in the annals of the sport. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

This dreadlocks maestro<\/span><\/span> was a legend who led a legendary path that would hard to follow much more <\/span><\/span>emul<\/span><\/span>ate<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He was an icon whose iconic status would never be dampen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He will go down in the pantheon of Antiguan football and folklore as one of the greatest to grace playfields across the country, and to an extent the Caribbean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He was a striker par excellence; a dribbler, a creator, a playmaker and a deadly marksman. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mack Pond, King George V, Princess Margaret School ground, Villa, YASCO or AGS Top Field,<\/span><\/span> Liberta<\/span><\/span>, English <\/span><\/span>Harbour<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Freeman\u2019s Village<\/span><\/span> and Barnes Hill<\/span><\/span> were his early stomping grounds before he won <\/span><\/span>national <\/span><\/span>championships at <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Antigua Recreation Ground, Police Recreation Ground and YASCO for Attackers, <\/span><\/span>Liberta<\/span><\/span> and English <\/span><\/span>Harbour<\/span><\/span>. I\u2019ll delve into those later.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All along his comparable <\/span><\/span>teammate <\/span><\/span>and defender <\/span><\/span>Dave \u201cWorld B\u201d<\/span><\/span> Edwards \u2013<\/span><\/span> who both grew up in Bassa and practiced their skills in the steel band house on<\/span><\/span> a<\/span><\/span> concrete <\/span><\/span>floor amongst iron racks and galvanized pans \u2013<\/span><\/span> spurred him on to greatness.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d was who <\/span><\/span>Keithly<\/span><\/span> \u201cKS\u201d Sheppard was to Empire and Grays Green community; he was who Mervin \u201cMR\u201d <\/span><\/span>Richards was for <\/span><\/span>Supa<\/span><\/span> Stars and <\/span><\/span>the national team of Antigua & Barbuda; he was who Daryl Greenaway was to Parham football and the community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As blasphemous as it may sound, he exhibited the skills illuminated by the incomparable great<\/span><\/span>Brazilian<\/span><\/span>, Pele, in the movie \u2018Escape to Victory\u2019; he had <\/span><\/span>mercurial talent and ball-running wizardry of Argentineans maestros; the late Diego Armando Maradona and Lionel Messi; he would fit comfortable into the dribbling boots and mesmeric skills of another Brazilian wonder, <\/span><\/span>Ronaldino<\/span><\/span>; and Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo would not be embarrassed if Steve \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d Hurst articulated the step-overs with panache and brilliance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Locally, <\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d formed a deadly combination Everton \u201c<\/span><\/span>Batow<\/span><\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/span>Gonsalves<\/span><\/span> in the youth and senior national team; he was forerunner to what Andy \u201c<\/span><\/span>Gandtone<\/span><\/span>\u201d Nesbitt exhibited in an Empire jersey; he schooled his cousin Kevin \u201c<\/span><\/span>Saxman<\/span><\/span>\u201d Watts into his silky skills. The likes of Derrick \u201cPretty Boy\u201d Edwards, <\/span><\/span>Peter \u201cBig Pete\u201d Byers, Randolph \u201c<\/span><\/span>Etty<\/span><\/span>\u201d Burton, <\/span><\/span>Tamarly<\/span><\/span>\u201cZiggy\u201d Thomas and many others would have dreamt of achieving \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u201d exploits before coming to fame.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For me, the only other player who came to close to immolating \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d was his fellow All Saints villager, Vernon \u201cPointe\u201d Carter who along with Steve \u201c<\/span><\/span>Laro<\/span><\/span>\u201d Isaac would have made an effective front-three as Mohammed Salah, <\/span><\/span>Sadio<\/span><\/span>Mane and Roberto <\/span><\/span>Firmino<\/span><\/span> did for Liverpool between 2016-2022.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Others would say that \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u201d advent into the Attackers\u2019 team in the late 1970s formed an awesome attacking trio with either of each: Kingsley \u201cFresh I\u201d Charles, \u201c<\/span><\/span>Badman<\/span><\/span>\u201d or Adam \u201cMuller\u201d Davis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let me use another sport \u2013 cricket \u2013 and three luminaries to demonstrate: \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u201d mere presence on the field was as intimidating as the master-blaster Sir Vivian Richards while at the same time sheer-dominating with ball as Sir Viv with the bat; he was elegantly gracefully, awe-enticing but spell-binding enigmatic as Carl Hooper, but was conquering and deadly with his left-foot as Brian Lara welding his blade.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d mesmerized opponents; bamboozled his team-mates; gave coaches and managers mild heart-attacks; and left spectators and fans <\/span><\/span>dumbfounded in glee and agony with his many career-defining and trademark ball-control, dribbles, passes, shots-at-goal and inventions and creativity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Conjure up these electrifying images: he had the knock of trapping the ball with his backside; he would leap airborne to control the ball with his instep, tight or chest; he mastered the bicycle or overhead kick; and would utilize any part of anatomy to score a goal \u2013 legitimate or otherwise.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Opposing goalkeepers feared his awesome power he generated from a low back-lift executed by both feet fueled by th<\/span><\/span>ighs which resembled the pistons of an engine, well-oiled and fine-tuned<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d tested and fooled referees into awarding him penalty and free-kicks; <\/span><\/span>he cha<\/span><\/span>llenged administrators; you would be able to<\/span><\/span> late Eustace Newton or St Claire Crump but <\/span><\/span>Keithroy<\/span><\/span> \u201c<\/span><\/span>Bordo<\/span><\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/span>Colbourne<\/span><\/span> or Uriah Caleb<\/span><\/span>would tell you<\/span><\/span>; and he divided opinion among coaches; those who watched the stands, among commentators and the media and those on the field who often questioned if he couldn\u2019t do it simpler.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But that was not \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d. He played to entertain and bring fun to the masses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d was conscious of what his status meant to the All Saints community. He was cognizant that his talent endeared his village to the wider Antiguan society. Just his father, the later <\/span><\/span>Edwardson<\/span><\/span> \u201cMarkie\u201d Hurst demonstrated when he carried the banner in the calypso arena in the 1970s & 1980s; or as Saints Brothers championed as brass-o-<\/span><\/span>rama<\/span><\/span> winners in 1975; or as King Progress became Calypso Monarch in 1984; or as King Banker<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> ruled the roost<\/span><\/span> 12 years later.<\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Early Upbringing<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d grew in the close-knit area, once known as Mack Alley, but renamed Bassa in the 1970s from where he honed his early football skills<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u25aa <\/span>Mother<\/span><\/span> & Father role<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

His mother, Lilian Mathew, an industrious hotel employee, did not have the privilege of spending the quality time she may have wanted with him because of work commitments, but the presence of his father, <\/span><\/span>Edwardson<\/span><\/span> \u201cMarkie\u201d Hurts, a senior health inspector, and the care and nurturing of his grandmother, <\/span><\/span>Nacessa<\/span><\/span> along with his aunts, uncles and cousin, and that of the <\/span><\/span>neighbourhood<\/span><\/span>, guaranteed the guidance needed was there.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is not to say he was unlike any ordinary <\/span><\/span>boy who played games in the road<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>; <\/span><\/span>cooked-out at ball-pasture; <\/span><\/span>hunted birds with a <\/span><\/span>catapult<\/span><\/span>;<\/span><\/span>fished at the ponds and dams; reared animals; played the steelpan.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He knew how to charm and mesmerize the opposite sex with athletic ability and handsome features.<\/span><\/span> Mary\u2026 the mother of \u2026 of his children can attest to that.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Like many of his generation he grew up listening to conscious lyrics of King Short Shirt, King Swallow, King Obstinate, <\/span><\/span>Latumba<\/span><\/span> et al; Sparrow, Kitchener, Shadow, <\/span><\/span>Chalkdust<\/span><\/span> and David Rudder of Trinidad & Tobago; Jamaican great Bobby Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaac just to name a few. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Learn to play via football on TV<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With no dedicated coaches around in the 1970s, <\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span> relied on the television for his tips which he gleaned from probably <\/span><\/span>one of the few TV at the late Percy Thomas\u2019 home, jostling with his peers to watch from the window.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Just after the 1974 World Cup finals in Germany, which he may have watched after it was shown on the big screen at the Drive-In Cinema at Michael\u2019s Mount in St John\u2019s, he was exposed to viewing the professional game regular when ABS TV showed the Big League highlights from England\u2019s First Division, now the Premier League, and the German Bundesliga.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From about age 11, he was inspired and fascinated <\/span><\/span>by the likes of Holland\u2019s genius Johan Cruyff, Germany\u2019s <\/span><\/span>Gerd<\/span><\/span> Muller, Kevin Keegan of England.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When the 1978 World Cup finals were played in Argentina, he was impressed with home country\u2019s star, Mario <\/span><\/span>Kempes<\/span><\/span>, while a certain Maradona was emerging.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Influences<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u25aa <\/span>Hilroy<\/span><\/span> \u201cAll-round\u201d <\/span><\/span>Carr<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

I believe <\/span><\/span>Hilroy<\/span><\/span> \u201cAll-round\u201d <\/span><\/span>Carr<\/span><\/span> played a mentoring role like a father-figure in \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u201d early development. Although not trained formally as coach, \u201cAll-round\u201d was there to guide him like so many of us from the Mack Alley or Bassa commune. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u25aa <\/span>Norman \u201cDread I\u201d Charles<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Afterwards Norman \u201cDread I\u201d Charles \u2013 someone whom he idolized — the hard-nosed uncompromising defender and Attackers captain, took up the mantle when \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d moved to play with Dreads following a fallout with Bassa in the All Saints Community Football League.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u25aa <\/span>The late Eustace Newton<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Some well-known figures in the community, a few of whom I would have already mentioned, also played an integral role, while the late eminent Director of Sports Pat Whyte and highly-respected coach <\/span><\/span>Daintes<\/span><\/span> \u201cDanny\u201d Livingstone had their influences. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CONCACAF Youth Championship in Miami<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It <\/span><\/span>was <\/span><\/span>Messrs. Whyte and Livingstone who selected him <\/span><\/span>and \u201cWorld B\u201d <\/span><\/span>among a group of talented<\/span><\/span> national youth team for the inaugural CONCACAF U20 tournament in Miami in 1980 to compete against <\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span>losing to the United States, El Salvador and the Netherlands Antilles but defeating Barbados 1-0 in their group matches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The exposure would have further spurred the imagination of \u201c<\/span><\/span>Nato<\/span><\/span>\u201d that he had what it took to develop into a great player. You can glean what it meant to us when he and World B returned to the Bassa block at the culvert next to where he lived to recall what transpired in Florida. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
