A Gaston Browne Problem<\/p>

The\u00a0Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party having\u00a0just won the\u00a0January\u00a02023 elections, but only by the narrowest of margins, has a problem on its hands.<\/p>\n

Despite celebrating a victory, the party\u2019s base\u00a0knows\u00a0deep down that they barely scraped by. In the following months, it\u00a0has become\u00a0clear that the reason,\u00a0the problem, the ABLP faced\u00a0for this flimsy victory\u00a0is\u00a0Gaston Browne.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Browne has\u00a0been in power for\u00a0nine\u00a0years, but his attitude has\u00a0shifted from\u00a0a\u00a0humble\u00a0and charismatic leader who\u00a0inspired the country in 2014\u00a0to\u00a0an\u00a0arrogant and dismissive\u00a0man in 2023.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

He\u00a0has become\u00a0increasingly dangerous in his approach to governing, ignoring the voices of party supporters and\u00a0countrymen\u00a0alike. His stubbornness\u00a0is\u00a0beginning\u00a0to damage the party’s popularity, and the election results\u00a0have\u00a0reflected this shift.<\/p>\n

Post-election, party members are hesitant to comment on Browne’s leadership style, fearful of the backlash from\u00a0a\u00a0powerful PM. But behind closed doors, there\u00a0is a palpable sense of dissatisfaction. The party won by one seat, losing the popular vote and many members of the\u00a0ABLP\u00a0are\u00a0unhappy with the entire outcome\u00a0while Browne\u2019s divisiveness to anyone who dares to suggest he change his approach is becoming more than members are willing to accept.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Many\u00a0are beginning\u00a0to whisper about the need for a change in leadership. They argued that\u00a0heading into a third term, Browne has\u00a0become stale and unresponsive to the needs of\u00a0Antiguans and Barbudans. His ego has grown\u00a0leaps and bounds, and he is now more focused on his personal goals\u00a0and gains\u00a0than the success of the party.<\/p>\n

Browne remains\u00a0entirely oblivious to the internal discord. He continues\u00a0to rely on his knack for belittling and marginalizing those\u00a0who are not his yes men and women, and he\u00a0is\u00a0confident in his ability to rally support with his\u00a0bullying tactics\u00a0whenever necessary, which happens all the time now.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Party members know\u00a0the risks of taking on a notoriously stubborn PM,\u00a0they see his Saturday \u201cBrowne and Browne\u201d show which should be renamed \u201cBeat up the Nation\u201d.\u00a0In this setting, Browne beats up anyone he sees as challenging or threatening his power.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Look no further\u00a0than his repeated weekly attacks on his own comrades Lennox Weston, Michael Browne, Gail Christian, and Dean Jonas. All who Browne blames for not doing enough to win their seats. Yet, he has not taken any responsibility for the environment\u00a0he created which contributed heavily to their losses at the January polls. An environment he was proud of when we walked up and down our twin island state saying repeatedly “The ABLP will win all 17 seats”. Now in Gaston’s mind, it was not his fault but that of the “losers” who “can’t come back to run again” in his words.<\/p>\n

With this in mind, the party faithful are now discussing the need for new leadership. Someone who is capable of bringing the base back home and showing respect to not only the party but the nation, as Browne has shown he is incapable or willing to change his approach.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, the fear for the ABLP is that Gaston Browne, not getting what he wants will burn the house down and return to the polls if he is challenged for leadership of the ABLP.\u00a0\u00a0Indeed, Browne has made this claim publicly on his radio show. A level of contempt for the comrades and countrymen and women he claims to \u201clove\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The party\u00a0should recognize\u00a0the damages\u00a0being\u00a0caused by a PM who became too big for his boots.\u00a0The man who lifted the party to success in 2014 has now become a Ten-ton anchor, pulling it down to the deepest parts of the sea.\u00a0If the party is to remain the solid institution that it once was, the members of the party must take steps to protect itself against the destruction of the ABLP\u2019s legacy by Gaston Browne.<\/p>\n

It is full-time to stand up and address \u2018The Problem\u2019 for the sake of our great nation.<\/p>\n
